You have to love these guys who can't ever admit that they were wrong or that a guy can improve or thrive in a new situation. Guys like Baker Mayfield, Geno Smith, Vinny Testaverde, Steve Young, and maybe even Sam Darnold and even Alex Smith all in one way or another shed bust labels to be productive quarterbacks. People decided Fields sucked almost right away and will give Caleb Williams every excuse in the world and say give it time, he's generational.
Ill say this, Fields has his issues but he's in a far better situation in Pittsburgh. Also for two straight years, the Steelers were left for dead and once again Tomlin has them playing well without an elite QB.
He might have his issues, but today I saw people like Chase Daniel and Dan Orlovsky, former quarterbacks in this league, say he was always capable of playing this well. People get lazy man. On here and elsewhere. It becomes easy to just accept what everyone else says. Even the Bears. They showed improvement and Fields showed improvement, even if just a little. Instead of building on that they chose to do a reset at the most important position on the field because Williams is supposedly generational. Williams put up a lot of yards today and maybe will start to improve. Or not. Time will tell.
Steelers are 3-0 , and Fields has a 95+ QB rating
Bears 1-2 and Caleb is at 65 QB rating .
Could have kept Fields and had Marvin Harrison Jr and Joe Alt is a hard alternate universe to ponder .
I never got it and there's still people who say that regardless of whether Williams busts or succeeds the Bears made the right decision.
I get that the in thing or prevailing wisdom is try to win when your quarterback is on his rookie deal or if you're not sure if he's the guy move on and try again.
But that's still the most important position on the field. And while the Bears are a bad organization, both they and Fields showed signs of life and improvement last year.
But rather than build on that, they start over at the most important position on the field with a guy who isn't as developed. So instead of incrementally improving you probably regress and hope that eventually Caleb Williams gets it.
I said it on Facebook. It seems teams are just going for guys who can do neat things that make the highlights at the position and hoping for the best. I mean Anthony Richardson looked worse than Caleb Williams yesterday. But he can throw far and run fast. Zach Wilson, Trey Lance... they get sucked in by physical tools and these guys haven't learned the basic aspects of actually playing quarterback.
