If they make it to the NFL then they get better physicals. Still when 300+ lb guys are exerting that much stress on their heart, it's always a possibility. Then you add the violent collisions and you have even more possibilities.

You don't necessarily need a tremendous amount of force, it's about getting hit in the wrong spot at the wrong time. Plus most high school and college athletes aren't going to have the sort of detailed medical exams that weed out underlying heart conditions.

Yes I noted that. Still, things can be missed. I agree that in this case it looked like the blow to the chest area was probably responsible for the reaction but we can't be sure until the doctors issue a statement.

Thank god he's still with us and I didn't jump the gun on the tweets the trolls were posting.
Sounds like he likely had a heart condition of some sort? Hearing he essentially had a heart attack on the field?

Let's see what they said with all the testings they will be performing. Unfortunate event and praying for the young man and his family that he makes a full recovery. On top of what Phoenix said, one cardiologist I was listening to also said that kids do not have fully developed chest walls. That's another factor for the young and developing kids.

I almost hope he had some sort of precondition. At least that would provide an explanation and perhaps somehow be preventable (detected) in the future for other players. If Hamlin had no precondition and this is just a total fluke, that's more scary because it could happen again, to any player, at any time.
Wishing him a speedy recovery with no after effects.

If it is CC then it is an extremely rare event that can happen to anyone. You need a sufficient blunt force trauma to hit during a specific time window of heart activity.
I posted some video of it happening before on the prior page

I remember being a kid when the "chest" game was going around school where you randomly punch people in the chest. Couple of kids died and schools freaked out

Here is a news article from 1991 about it

But basically..regardless of how rare it is...if you roll the dice enough times it will happen
The gofundme for his toy drive has more than surpassed the $2500 goal. Currently at $4 Million.

Oh wow, I remember playing that. "Open Chest!" is what we'd say as we punched a friend in the chest. So always have one arm covering your chest. Man that's dumb, but kids be kids.
Such an awful thing to happen. Sounds like he'll likely pull through but I think his career has got to be over. On one hand, if I was the player I would have wanted the game to go on, but on the other hand I don't want my brothers to have to play in that state or mind.

CC is a serious thing.

Depends on how long he was in cardiac arrest before being revived. Hopefully minimal long term damage.
