Wow I didn't know he failed at Missouri.

In his lone season in charge of the defense, the Tigers struggled greatly in Wilks' 4-2-5 defensive system, particularly against the run. Of Missouri's 13 opponents, seven of them rushed for over 200 yards. In-state opponent Southeast Missouri State even racked up 294 yards on the ground.

In an October game at home against Tennessee, the Tigers' defense hit rock bottom. The defense yielded nearly 700 yards of total offense (458 rushing yards) in a 62-24 blowout loss. They ended the week ranked dead last in the FBS in total rushing yards allowed per game (283.9) and second to last in average yard per carry (6.3).

Sounds eerily similar to what we are going through. It will only get worse!

I supported Saleh & Ryans when the D had some struggles in some stretches, but this feels monstrously different. I can't support Wilks based on what I've seen. It's not an issue of a few calls I didn't like, it's total team collapse on defense.

Guys are fundamentally unprepared, the scheme has them constantly out of position, and myself as a football intellectual but not an NFL coach am so easily able to point out severe issues pre-snap almost all game for the past two weeks. The play-calling has been horrific.

This team has never looked like this. We have far superior talent than we did under Ryans and Saleh now, and the amount of WTF mistakes and astonishingly bad play calls and situational incompetence is absolutely unconscionable. His scheme is a terrible transition away from what we did best. This isn't growing pains of a rookie DC, this is just flat out ineptitude.
You Nailed it but until Stubborn as a Goat make a change this season is down the drain

The worst part is there's nothing we can do, staff wise, outside of stripping playcalling duties. And I don't think that's gonna happen. Wilks isn't a play-caller. He's been really bad everywhere he goes, but he talks a good game and tricks people into continuing to give him chances apparently. Unfortunately we fell for it.

I see no scenario he's retained unless we manage to go all the way and win a Super Bowl. Seems like no chance of that now.

Unless Wilks reads a 4-3-4 style defense for dummies book over the bye and rolls back his idiotic changes while giving the play-calling to someone else, we're gonna keep getting steam-rolled on D, IMO.
I remember the good ol days when we only lost games because of injuries. If this dude can't coach a healthy roster, wtf happens if/when we have an injury?

He's not failing to acknowledge it, he thinks Wilks is legit a good coach.

I want to know what this "pretty good track record" is.

Was it when he failed miserably as HC of the Cards and the defense he installed took them from Top 10 rushing defense in the NFL to dead last?

When he was let go by the Browns after a year?

When Missouri fans were happy to see him leave after his short stint as DC led to one of the program's worst defensive outputs in its history?

The only time that you can argue that he looked good is when he had Ron Rivera, a very well accomplished defensive coach looking over his shoulder.

Wow I didn't know he failed at Missouri.

It was an absolute disaster and for some reason Matt Rhule chose to bring him back to the NFL to be the Panthers secondary coach.

His defenses often get their doors blown in but he's really, really good at taking responsibility after each miserable performance.

That was a game where Mizzou allowed 519 yards of total offense, including 340 yards on the ground. And that caused plenty of frustration among Tigers fans, specifically toward the direction of 1st-year defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

"I take full responsibility for the performance last week," Wilks said on Tuesday, according to Dave Matter. "[It] wasn't to our standard. Not even close. I've got to do a better job."

This is why making a move at the trade deadline potentially accomplishes nothing...even if it's a corner like Surtain. This defensive output isn't a talent issue. It's a play calling issue. Ryans had no issue with basically the same personnel and Saleh who had quite a few of these same pieces before that. I will acknowledge there were some big boy throws from Burrow and Cousins a few times in their games into tight windows. However more times than not, guys have just been out of position. Taking the top Def in the NFL last season and turning it into this is absolutely embarrassing.

If no move is made at DC then I think it means there is no one else Kyle trusts to take the role on the staff or nobody else who wants it. Which means we are probably stuck with Wilks through the remainder of this season.

I wouldn't trade for a rental for sure but a guy like Surtain that would be part of the long term future I'd do it in a heartbeat.

If Wilks was going to be fired, they would have done it already. He's on a short leash though. If the defense struggles against Jacksonville and they lose, he's gone 100%. There is definitely a rift growing between him and Shanahan.

I'm pretty sure Steve's already lost the defense.
This guy's been fired more than the weapons/rockets in the middle east war.

If they don't move on from him now during the bye highly unlikely they move on from him this season.

Maybe, but they're mature enough to realize their execution absolutely blew yesterday. For Bosa and Armstead to let Burrow get away on that play they had him for a sack was pathetic. One of the cornerstones of this Di had been tackling, and that is missing now.
