Coach - Steve Wilks thread

It's his first year as DC with the niners sheesh. if I can recall it's not the defense job to score points on offense. Wilks gave the team a chance to win vs the Browns Vikings....and the Bengals game was hard to defend when your offense is puting the defense in bad positions with the 3 turn overs they committed

Each team is settting offensive records against this defense on a weekly basis. I don't care if its his first year. They hired a veteran coach so he could hit the ground running instead he's blown up on the runway and has this defense looking its absolute worst since 2016.

They seem physically incapable of getting off the field most of the time. 3rd and 10, 3rd and 15, 3rd and 20, the other team has a great shot of converting. The run defense is completely AWOL, there is nothing you can point to with this defense and say "they do this really well!" unless you're talking about giving up big plays.

I feel claims this is a dark ages of 49er football D, are greatly exaggerated!

Burrow completed 19 consecutive passes before Brock even through one interception.

The defense gave up 17 points before Brock turned the ball over.

Mixon was running all over this defense before Brock turned the ball over

Brock's turnovers only accounted for 7 points.

Brock's two interceptions were brutal, but the defense was playing like ass for the entire games before the turnovers happened.

This is a situation where you can throw up any pff stat you want, but what do your eyeballs tell you? and everyone else? The last 3 games and last 2 in particular, The once elite 49ers defense cannot stop anybody, running or passing. C'mon man, everyone can see it. There is clearly something wrong with the defense that needs to be fixed. PPG doesn't tell the whole story. The Browns settled for punts and FG's when they could've scored TD's, same with Minn. If the Bengals don't miss a FG and fumble in the RZ, that game could've been 41-17.

And it's a product of facing offenses lead by Kenny Pickett, Daniel Jones, and Josh Dobbs. These are very bad offenses. There were eyebrow raising sequences in those games as well. We had one good performance against a solid offense in Dallas.

any pff stat, sure, PPG, don't think so, that's the entire enchilada of what our D is trying to do
Oliver jumped a route, we had the opening drive stuffed, and made Burrow look like Barry Sanders, some of that is the D sucking, sure, it's execution tho
not scheme, KS talked about it..

Look CIN has some great players and some good pros, they got the best of us, we move on..
I can say the execution was not good on D, I haven't seen 1 person put up a scheme related issue, from the Bengals game..

Dude I don't care about the stats, save that b******t for the sight challenged. This defense is letting opposing offenses do whatever they want on a weekly basis. This is the worst I've seen them look since the Tomsula days. Every week it gets a little bit worse. There's not a single thing that they are doing well at this point.

The niners were also running the ball very well against the Cowboys. The Cowboys had the ball 22 minutes. Since then the oppositions time of possession has been 33, 34, and 31 minutes. Running the ball and controlling the clock looks like it may have been masking an underlying issue with this defense. Now coincidentally since we haven't been able to run the ball efficiently the last few weeks the defense has been exposed. David Lombardi mentioned this as well.

Well unfortunately the stats are going to catch up to the actual play. It's a matter of time without major fixes.

This. The guy inherited one of the most talented defenses of all time and looks clueless. That absolutely wears on a vet team like this, who know what they're capable of, but looking weak due to Wilks.
Could the way he coaches just not fit with the personal. Both Ryans and Saleh were always fired up on the sideline. Full of emotion and I always felt the defense fed off of their energy. It doesn't seem like the defense has that kind of passion. I know they are professionals but you need a leader you will follow.

I'm sure that plays a role. Saleh and Ryans were fiery, Wilks isn't. I don't think that's the primary reason, but it's part of what has changed this season.
