Coach - Steve Wilks thread

Wilks, speaking to 49ers team reporter Lindsey Pallares before the season, shared the reasoning behind his preference for working from the coaching box.
"I try to remove myself from that element during the game so I can get ahead with my call," Wilks said. "So being in the box, which I've been on the field and in the box before, I just feel more calm and relaxed up there."

1) You're way behind with your calls
2) I'd feel more comfortable up there too knowing Shanahan is about is about embarass me on national tv yelling in my ear after each defensive play.

Bullocks is a former player and I have to imagine is absolutely shuddering in disgust over some of the stuff Wilks has called. Bullocks has been here for 7 years now and has over 10 years of coaching XP now. I'd let him have a chance if the sputtering continues, but my fear is they ride it out.

The reasons why I'm not excited about him becoming DC. They always look to promote internally and he didn't even seem to be a consideration, not with the 49ers or elsewhere in the league despite having worked on a top defensive staff since 2019. That to me speaks volumes. I also don't think you want to drop a first time coordinator in the midst of all of this, with all those expectations on their shoulders and without even the benefit of a full offseason in prepping for the role.

I think it either needs to be someone really experienced and accomplished that can step into the role with minimal prep time or stick with Wilks, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Bullocks has risen up the ranks though, now moving from S coach to serving as the DB coach. If anyone knows how Ryans and Saleh got the team prepped, he'd be one. I'm just not sure he was being groomed for the role yet not necessarily because of lack of potential, but more because the timing just wasn't there yet and/or we already had another guy in mind. They probably wanted him to get more XP as a full position group coach first. I read his name being thrown out as a DC candidate for Minnesota earlier this year, and one podcast had his name for 49ers DC.

All that said.. yeah.. I think it's a toss-up. Bullocks would be a total unknown. If the defense fell to the worst in the NFL though.. Well... At that point, how much worse can you do than the worst?
Man hiring Wilks was the worst off-season move. Did Ryans take any coaches with him that we could've promoted?

Exactly.

Dude needs to be embarassed instead of hiding away where he no immediate accountability for his horrific calls.
Standing this guy in a different physical location won't fix things. LOL. Wow. What desperation. Fire immediately. New defensive coordinator. The same garbage calls and scheme from the sideline. No thanks. Richard Sherman was totally roasting this guy. Listen to his interview.

I feel claims this is a dark ages of 49er football D, are greatly exaggerated!

did we see what we did vs DAL?, comp that to how LAR looked

They don't make a change....where we gonna be at 2 weeks from now?

We only had 8 weeks so far, and if you look at the last 4 games...it is what? 23? 24? PPG?

So clearly trending in the wrong direction.

Exactly what I said. I'm reading X rumblings of Kyle meeting with him this week to discuss the sidelines and apparently secondary players are now saying the coverages don't sync with the front 7 scheme like last year.

Standing him on the sideline is not going to fix this. Wow.

He's old and not exactly...spry.

He might rupture an Achilles if he...wait...he probably won't have anything to celebrate so never mind.

Yup. I have no idea how they fix this with this dude. If players are starting to b***h it's obviously to me and you.
Reality is Wilks isn't going anywhere right now. We keep losing and defense is bad maybe but not right now. Do I agree no
Wilks whenever he's told to stop letting teams run all over his defense:

Dick for DC!
Listening to Lombardi earlier. I don't want Kris to ever leave but it must be hard when you're hired AND told you can't hire your own staff. Need to use what is mostly here already. Not giving Wilks a break but only Kyle and the 9ers would make such a demand.

A flip side thought…
