I feel claims this is a dark ages of 49er football D, are greatly exaggerated!

did we see what we did vs DAL?, comp that to how LAR looked

Dude I don't care about the stats, save that b******t for the sight challenged. This defense is letting opposing offenses do whatever they want on a weekly basis. This is the worst I've seen them look since the Tomsula days. Every week it gets a little bit worse. There's not a single thing that they are doing well at this point.

The players are going to start giving up, if some of them haven't already.

Listening to Lombardi earlier. I don't want Kris to ever leave but it must be hard when you're hired AND told you can't hire your own staff. Need to use what is mostly here already. Not giving Wilks a break but only Kyle and the 9ers would make such a demand.

A flip side thought…
I think it's fairly common practice when a team has to backfill a coordinator that's moving off to be a head coach. Eagles offense and defense I'm sure is filled with the same position coaches as last year, except for the dudes Gannon and Steichen brought with them. (Eagles by the way have a young DC that came from the Hawks and he's doing pretty well). Same for Chiefs offense when Bienemy left.

what you're bringing up about hiring your own staff pretty much only applies when the whole staff is being replaced ala Cardinals
If he's not replaced now, it's just delaying the inevitable. Colossal waste of defensive talent if it comes too little too late.
Before Wilks

After Wilks

He's old and not exactly...spry.

He might rupture an Achilles if he...wait...he probably won't have anything to celebrate so never mind.

He is only 54.

It's his first year as DC with the niners sheesh. if I can recall it's not the defense job to score points on offense. Wilks gave the team a chance to win vs the Browns Vikings....and the Bengals game was hard to defend when your offense is puting the defense in bad positions with the 3 turn overs they committed

Ryans did great in his first year as a DC.

Shanny and Wilks will have a conversation, "Just the two of us". Forcing him out of the booth isn't gonna be enough! Wilks has to go. He's just not a good fit. I initially thought this would be a great hire given Wilks experience as a DC and HC. But clearly this was not a good hire. So before the season is a total loss we need to make a change at DC. I'm hoping Daniel Bullocks or Johnny Holland are elevated (if they want the job). I just don't think we can drop anymore games trying to get Wilks to figure it out. This defense is way too talented to look this bad. To my knowledge the defense is pretty healthy. It shouldn't look this bad.

Wait hold on now, when Wilks was on the field as interim HC for Carolina they went on a 4-2 record. So maybe switching from the booth to the field will be better??

It's been a devastating drop off over the past 2 weeks. The d has become a factory for all-pro QBs.

Part of the problem with Shanahan firing Wilks is going to be swallowing his ego, because Shanahan hired the guy.

Shanahan needs to realize that without his dominating defense, he's nothing.

Plain and simple.

No, Jed just extended him for underperforming.
the core player base is the same from both Salah and Demeco era, yet performance-wise, it's night and day with Wilks.

something is not jiving right. there is a disconnect. lack of cohesion. these players are too good to not be flourishing. the leftover denominator is Wilks.

looking forward to seeing what comes out of that talk with him and Shanahan, regarding the move to on field at the very least.

Exactly what I said. I'm reading X rumblings of Kyle meeting with him this week to discuss the sidelines and apparently secondary players are now saying the coverages don't sync with the front 7 scheme like last year.

who's said this? source?

Frankly, I really don't think it will mater much. This is a scheme unfitness issue. Wilks is doing different things in coverage that this defense isn't built for. He's running a MAN for a defense built for zone. Hence, the pass rush isn't matching the coverage. This defense is built front to back. Wilks is coaching and play calling as if the defense is built back to front. And, he's not utilizing the wide 9 as it should be used. Instead of letting his front get after the passer he's running "game" in the most inopportune times. It's why we're getting caught in screens.

So coming down from the booth won't really change much.
