Shanahan needs to realize that without his dominating defense, he's nothing.

Plain and simple.

This is true. Shanahan has had dominating defenses that mostly carried this team. This was his crutch. Without his crutch, he's falling all over the place.

The offense prior to these couple of weeks was averaging over 30ppg

If he had a QB worth a crap instead of Jimmy for all those years then offense would've been much better. Just look at how the offense looked with a 7th round pick for about a dozen games.

Bad takes.

I'm on the Mike Zimmer or bust bandwagon for these reasons:

-20 years experience as a defensive playcaller in the NFL. If anyone could come in and steer this ship in the right direction, it's him. During his time as a DC/HC he had ten Top 10 defenses.

-He's primarily run a 4-3 scheme that emphasizes stuffing the run, "being ahead in the count" and playing fast at all times. He's done a great job dialing up creative blitzes and finding ways to keep the pressure on quarterbacks. Guys like Warner, Bosa, Hargrave and Ward are perfect fits for what he likes to do.

-Klint Kubiak worked under him in Minnesota so there's some familiarity there already.

If he was interested in the job and they want to move on from Wilks, he's my choice hands down. No one better out there right now whose scheme most closely matches the personnel.

Is Mike Zimmer available?
I think all of Wilks' decisions, both in scheme and personnel, need to be reevaluated by another source entirely.

I'm getting the creeping feeling he's utterly incompetent.

Standing this guy in a different physical location won't fix things. LOL. Wow. What desperation. Fire immediately. New defensive coordinator. The same garbage calls and scheme from the sideline. No thanks. Richard Sherman was totally roasting this guy. Listen to his interview.

He's old and not exactly...spry.

He might rupture an Achilles if he...wait...he probably won't have anything to celebrate so never mind.

He is only 54.

Holy s**t, he looks 70. BTW, has he been fired yet?

So all of a sudden when the offense plays bad because coaches have figured them out, the defense plays bad too? This is a coaching problem. With this team, they have to score 30+ points to win now with Wilks. Before, they could win scoring less.

That has always been a concern with Kyle.

I guess we'll find out how good Kyle really Is now that he's unlikely to have a top ranked defense helping him out.

Yep exactly. Shanahan's success with this team was with a dominating defense. He can't play his style of football without it.

Shanahan needs to realize he messed up and fire Wilks. Promote Kris or Daniel and move on.

Part of the reason they were scoring 30+ per game was the defense. They were stopping the other team and getting the ball back to the offense. Often times it was with a short field to make scoring easier. During the 3 losses the D couldn't get off the field on 3rd down. The Browns had the ball for 6 more minutes. The Vikings for 10 more minutes. The Bengals for 3 more minutes.

The 49ers win with stout defense and controlling the ball. The offense has moved okay even during the losses but you can't score when you don't have the ball unless you get a pick 6.

Didn't he have a much younger supermodel wife or girlfriend right when he was getting canned by minn ? Sounds like he's enjoying himself.

He's not working anywhere as far as I can tell. He was supposed to join Deion at Colorado but that never happened.

And when those guys flop, not only have you lost a DC, you've lost a useful defensive assistant too.

If anyone already on staff was capable of holding the job down and actually wanted it, they'd already have it.
Shanahan was asked what deficiencies were the most alarming against Cincinnati: missed tackles, an ineffective pass rush or leaky coverage.

"All that stuff alarmed me the most," Shanahan said. "The combination of it all happening at the same time."
