How good was our D coordinator during the first five games?

He wasn't. The same issues were there, and the schedule was a lot easier.

The Rams and Cardinals (to a lesser extent) did the same things the Browns, Vikings and Bengals did. Nacua in that Rams game was killing us.

What changed is that the offense isn't jumping out to that quick lead anymore and that was covering up a lot of the issues.

Yeah the first five games are irrelevant. Saleh/Ryan's did such a good job of in game adjustments. You may see the opposing O drive down the field once but it sure wasn't consistent. Bengals & Vikings walked up and down the field, ALL DARN GAME! Hell even the Browns move s the ball when it mattered.

Passion. Find it. Both coaches had it and so did their players.
Maybe he needs a Red Bull or 2.

That 99 yard drive by the Cardinals was when I knew for certain that we were all in danger.

Same, that was brutal
Remember this about Wilks:

1. He was banging the table for Oliver, how does that look now?

2. Heaped praise on Kinlaw all offseason.

This guy has to coach on the sidelines or nothing changes.

Red flag moment fo sure
Good news is, we won't need any cornerbacks at all if offenses need 10 guys on the line to block us

The complete ease the steelers scored with during an absolute domination was the original red flag. It showed he stops pushing/caring/passion or whatever you want to call it once he's comfortable. Football is about never being comfortable.
"There's also times that, man, I need to talk to this dude, and I don't feel like talking to him on the phone," Shanahan shared. "I need to look him in his eyes and have a conversation with him. There's stuff about that I missed. So, I don't ever think that's the answer or what's wrong."

Shanahan and Wilks have had those discussions and may continue to do so in preparation for the 49ers' Week 10 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"Now, I have talked to Steve about possibly coming down," Shanahan said. "One thing I do love about Steve is I think he's a man; he's a leader of men. And I would love, in some instances, to have him down there, to be able to address some guys certain ways, and things like that. And when you do that, there are always stuff you lose from being up top. So there are pluses and minuses to both."

This is EXACTLY what I've been saying. Our guys NEED a dude who can address them face-to-face. These are men, and many of our men are also leaders on this team. Our guys need someone to not just talk to them from afar, they need direct contact. Show them while telling them. It CAN make a difference and I don't know how you can argue that one-on-one coaching would hurt much.

Wait, so does this mean there is literally no hope for the defense?

+1. Not like he can't/won't have an assistant (or two or three) up in the booth to tell him what they're seeing from that higher vantage point. He needs to be on the sideline, and he needs to bring energy.

Not having the up to the min feel from the field and the input from the players during real time has to put you at a disadvantage imo.
He should be getting feedback from his players as the game is going.
