I think if you are a very good coordinator the booth is fine, otherwise better off on the sidelines.

Don't these guys have assistants in the booth to give them that perspective during the game as well?

Now he can be embarrassed even more lol. Looking forward to Kyle biting his head off at some point. lolol. "BLITZ AGAIN?? YOU FKING DUMBASS!" while slapping him with the playsheet.
Before the season started, PFF ranked the Top 10 DCs around the league:

Belichick - NE
Lou Anarumo - Cincy
Vic Fangio - Miami
Dan Quinn - Dallas
Steve Spagnolo - KC
Wink Martindale - NYG
Raheem Morris - LAR
Brian Flores - Minn.
Eviro Evero - Carolina
Steve Wilks - SF

Of all those guys, the only ones in the booth are Quinn, Fangio, and Wilks.

I'm not sure I agree with all the rankings but it does make the point that most prefer to go eyeball-to-eyeball with their guys.

No Mike Macdonald on that list?

That's not going to make any difference. It's his scheme, calls and coaching. It doesn't matter at all where he physically stands.

Disagree. We've had a fiery DC on the sidelines since this defense rose to top levels and I really think there's something to being able to look guys in the eyes, gather them around when they need settling, etc. Many of the problems are definitely scheme, and I'm certain that is being addressed also, but this shows they're trying to fix their issues.

He's not fiery anyway. He's a low key guy. It's all the other tings I said.

where is all this vitriol coming from , when he wears the 49er gear, I'm gonna back Wilks
he'll get it fixed
I've been really down on wilks but in seeing some of the all22.... I mean our guys are playing like idiots many times. Warner vs the Bengals was brutal.... That's as bad as I've seen him look and it was basic stuff.

I want to absolve wilks but we'll see

So Wilks is moving to the booth now. I hope its because he thinks it will benefit his play calling and the defense and not just because he's being told to.

Watch him go to the sideline and call a s**tty game and say, see I told you guys it wouldn't work. Lol

what'll actually happen, is he'll go to the sideline and it will be a nice W, and ppl will say him being on the sideline was the causal factor

Same for me. Huf and Fred are making really bad plays in the run game. It's Wilks and the players not just Wilks.

great balanced takes, guys. been saying it for weeks. I'm seeing a lot of poor execution, in addition to the infamous scheme head scratcher

100% they do. I was a booth assistant for a defensive coordinator of a junior college team, NFL defensive coordinators probably have 3-4 if not more. I'd guess only one talks to them, but the others are looking at matchups, possible injuries, personnel groups, etc.

Yah I agree its not ALL on Wilks, the players also need to execute. Its also not all on Wilks that players miss or whiff on tackling. My problem with Wilks is that he's not correcting things like benching players and play calling. But at the same time the offense has been sputtering too. We gotta get back to winning!!!!
This isn't the 60s-90s. Technology has made it possible to get the exact same looks instantly. These old-heads just get stuck in their ways and it's more about their own comfort and not wanting to adjust. Being down on the field allows him to look guys in their eyes and hold them accountable for bad plays, just like they can now do to him when he makes a bad call. He also gets to praise them when they do good, and with SOME players, they need that confidence boost every once in a while. Was he in the booth when he took over as the head coach in Carolina?

I honestly still don't understand why he changed up the dynamics of this defense when it was working so well with the previous 2 DCs who behaved like intense sports dad's instead of a distant grandfather on gameday. I'm just glad he finally stepped out of his comfort zone. Hopefully the players respond in a big way and clean up all the dumb mistakes.

TELLS us all PFF ain't know crap.. that's the way I see it..

i would put Flores over Quinn and Anarumo but not over Fangio.. and both runs the base 3-4 scheme... Spagnolo will be behind Belichick because he can plan around his opponents
