Wilks and his defence showed up at the Superbowl. End of story.

For three quarters, and then they s**t the bed.

Here's how KC's last four drives went:

  • Touchdown
  • Field Goal
  • Field Goal
  • Touchdown

They couldn't stop KC at the end of the game, partly because Wilks went conservative and started playing a soft-zone and let Mahomes do whatever he wanted with the underneath routes (to the point where Kyle had to call an angry timeout to correct Wilks).

Steve called a good game, but dropped the ball when push came to shove.

I see you held KC to 2 FGs. One of those TDs was a 16 yard drive lol. The only true TD drive was deep in Q5.

Very good game plan by Wilks.

Too many 3 & outs that tired the D out at the end.

I feel we could do better than Wilks but the loss isn't on him.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't think he's x's & o's creative enough for today's game and when you look back at this season they underwhelmed.

I have no idea if there is any young couch out there worth taking a shot at? Any college guys doing anything impressive defensively?

I wish I knew - There has to be somebody!

Valdez-Scandling was wide open on that play. Yes, it was one play, but they still gave up the TD.
Wilkes had the D playing very well last night. kyle has yet to fire anyone in his tenure with SF (except Hightower?). I don't think he will now, I'd think a whole off-season to get on the same page and get more comfortable will benefit everyone as will the continuity with players.

it is interesting though, that Kyle had to call timeout to change Wilkes' call late in the game. That's significant in such a big moment. That and the zero blitz that Wilkes called late in overtime. I think Kyle was big mad about that. we will see.

I think the mistake was hiring Wilkes in the first place, but it might be more hurtful to the team to fire him now.

Not hurtful at all. What would hurt is running those same vanilla schemes again next year. The entire league will have this soft scheme on tape from the SB and will exploit us…

I could easily see them agree to "mutually part ways".

I do think there's still some animosity going back to the whole situation with the blitz after the Vikings game and moving down to the booth.

Kyle did throw Steve under the bus with that public apology.

The timeout on the final drive didn't help because Kyle was pissed.

Is he gone yet?

the hope would be that Wilkes has an entire off season to work with Kyle on developing the defensive scheme, and there will be improvement.
hurtful because who else is out there, the players love him, and continuity helps, not changing coaches every off season

Which makes no sense. An offensive minded coach working with a defensive coach on how to call and coach a defense. Kyle doesn't have time for that. And we certainly don't want to see a pro bowl laden unit getting burned weekly next year. If Kyle wants to use the loyalty card, transition him to defensive backs coach / assistant DC. Get someone in now. Belichick ? Pete the Cheat ? Rex Ryan ? Gut someone from Spags staff ? Anyone please…

Really have to wonder why does Kyle constantly need to coddle these guys into doing their jobs?

Belichick would be very intriguing but it will never happen. Pete would be interesting too. I'd go for that. Another option would be Vrabel.
not sure if Kyle would want these guys, they are all Alphas and Kyle kinda wants to be the big dog
We need to bolster that defense.

Shanny has shown he can't beat great defenses so there is no point in investing in more offensive skill positions when they just disappear against playoff defenses.

When Kyle was first hired here as head coach, Mike Vrabel was his #2 choice(Vic Fangio was #1) for DC.

The problem is Vrabel would just be here for one season and then dip out.

I wanted him gone after the first 2 playoff games but was elated to see how well prepared and motivated he had that unit for the game. Though we lost, I want him back next year. I can't imagine a DC that will have them playing better in his first year than Wilks will in his second.
