I like his experience and how CAR players had nice things to say about him.

Also a dedicated 4-3 guy too.

He also values the role of the secondary. Not bashful about bringing pressure, either as the situation suggests or to just change up the look - keep the opponent off-balance.

He also fills the Anthony Linn role of an experienced voice on the sideline or office to counsel Kyle. With all the recent changes in staff, this is a wise move.

If he does really well and becomes a head coach next year, do we get more comp picks then?

Yes.

No. He has to be in his position for at least two years.

Okeydoke, I stand corrected. We'll just have to wait for two seasons for this to become a possibility. Given the history of his token one season or less head coaching jobs, Steve would have to field the best defense in the league in 2023 for an NFL owner to give him a real shot at an NFL head coaching job in 2024. To that end, if he is to be poached from us, it likely won't be after one season, if ever.

We have three years of evidence of what a "Steve Wilks defense" looks like. He spent one year in charge of the defense at Carolina (2017), Arizona (2018) and Cleveland (2019). His defense finished in the top four in the NFL blitz rate all three seasons, according to Football Outsiders. He blitzes his defensive backs at a top five rate in both Carolina and Arizona, but that data was not readily available for 2019.

BUT Here's the question to really ask.... HOW Good were the players on the Defense? If Demeco Ryan's or Robert Saleh have crappy players do you think they would have a top 10 Defense? I mean I remember SO many here back in 2017 and 2018 wanted Saleh's head then in 2019 the Niners have one of the Best defenses in the league playerwise and Saleh becomes King.

I like it. He does good work in the secondary. Essentially another experienced HC.

I like this comment, and I bring it up for a reason. I have no idea if Wilks does good work in the secondary, but I trust Gold49Digger that he does. But it does make me wonder a bit.

Is the news that now former 49ers DB coach Cory Undlin is going BYE-BYE have anything to do with the hiring of Wilks? As in "I have my own guy for this job." Or, "I do not agree with Hamlin's philosophy?" Or, is it simply "I don't like Hamlin?" Did Wilks request that the 49ers get rid of Hamlin before he took the gig?

Am I reading something that isn't printed?

Brian Burns for a conditional 7th round pick, who then voluntarily signs for vet minimum.
Great hire

only downside is a bottom-tier franchise is sure to pick him away from us next offseason
