Coach - Steve Wilks thread

I like the fact that his teams have always been heavy blitz teams. With the speed our LBs have as well as Hufanga's ability to rush the passer, he seems like a good fit. He likes to play in a 4-2-5 alignment much of the time.

Now go get Daron Payne.

What he did in Carolina was nothing short of amazing. He's mature and let's hope he's around for some Super Bowl runs.

I noticed in some games in the latter part of the season we weren't able to get to the QB as often.
Good signing. Hopefully add some stability.

Does this mean we're losing another DC in 2-3 years?

Hopefully at least 2 years. If it's a 1 and done, they don't get comp picks.

Nice! Who will be our DC in 2024.

Hopefully it's two or more years before we have to worry about that so we qualify for comp picks. Wilks background is with DB's, and I'd also anticipate that Bullocks gets the title of Secondary/DB coach as opposed to strictly safeties. I think after working with Wilks for a few years Daniel Bullocks may be ready to step into that role if/when Steve moves on.

Agreed. I'm expecting great things and our defense to continue to evolve. I am most excited about our secondary and how we generate pressure.

We don't have a single high right now. Gonna be interesting to see how safety is addressed.

Get used to hearing that A LOT. That was his version of Singletary's "I need to look at the film." It was his answer for everything.

Sounds like you are not a fan?

I was thinking the same thing. For a single high you need a real fast dynamic safety. Those are hard to find imo.

On the major plus side for what little I know of Wilks

1. We have at least one CB that is fine solo coverage (3 deep should continue to be fine)

2. We have a generationally good Linebacker that is fine covering in space (good for 2 underneath coverage)

3. 3 deep negates some of the weakness of Huff and lets him excel at what he does great....rally to the ball and wait for reinforcements.

The draft is could tell us a heck of a lot about what the defensive plan is next year. It appears Wilks is good and getting production from rookie defensive backs, I wonder if he is going to ask for a true FS with sideline to sideline range, and I wonder if we see a tweener CB/S drafted as a future nickel.

I also wonder what this does for Drake Jackson. Burns said he really liked how Wilks just turned him loose after the QB, but we have also seen traditional zone blitz stuff that has the DL peel off into underneath zone. Jackson probably missed the first round because he was misused in coverage, but he has done that before.... Do we see Jackson zone blitz? Do we see a Bosa/Jackson combo stacked to the weak side?

I would suspect Phoenix is not a fan of excuse making and is more of a show me, don't tell me type.
