Dontae Whitner mentioned this last night in the postgame. Teams are max protecting and using simple two or three route concepts to beat the secondary. Not all the time, but it's something they do to get plays like this. I would have liked to see more press man last night to challenge the young MIN WRs.
I want this turd out of this team immediately!

But the oddest play of the night might have been the most backbreaking for the 49ers. Facing third-and-6 at their 40 with 16 seconds left and no timeouts, the Vikings appeared poised to take a pass underneath that might help set up a field goal.

Instead, Niners defensive coordinator Steve Wilks dialed up an all-out blitz, sending seven defenders at Cousins. According to Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell, Cousins recognized the pressure and checked into a deep shot for rookie wideout Jordan Addison.

As the ball flew toward Addison, Niners cornerback Charvarius Ward stepped in front for what looked like his second interception of the night. But Addison wrestled it away from him and, with no help behind Ward, raced into the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown to give Minnesota a 16-7 lead.

"That was a game-changing play," O'Connell said.

It was also an unusual call by Wilks. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, it was the first 7-man pass rush in the last 30 seconds of a half in opposing territory since Week 11 of 2020. Asked after the game if he was OK with the call, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said it would be a topic his staff will talk about in the coming days.

"That's something we'll discuss throughout this week," Shanahan said. "Obviously, I did not like the result."

I don't advocate firing Wilks, but , Kyle has some real coaching to do with him. Kyle is the OC , but more importantly, is the HC, and therefore responsible for what comes out of the D coach. Saleh was a stud, and Meco was even better. But both left and kyle was left once again with no DC. He made remarkable choices both times, but this time….well, we'll see. The talent is there, but not the DCoaching. Kyle as HC has to fix it.

Wide 9s..boy we got cut to pieces with their run game. Meco had an answer, and maybe kyle needs to go back and look over that with Wilks. DBs let the same damn pass go 25-30 yards 10 times ( i lost count after 8) right to middle of field, and if we had placed one DB at that one spot, he would have had 8 INTs. Also , cuzins was unbelievably hot , the best QBing I've seen in a long time. He played the best game of his life…so there is that too.

But somewhere, somehow, kyle has to get Wilks untracked…I mean what happened? Did he suddenly fall off the earth? We had played 5 games and looked tremendous on D …and O. Did the league suddenly figure us out and now has a way to stop the 9ers D? I have no idea what to do or where to go. But one thing for sure…this is not just a Wilk problem , it is a kyle problem too. On O, kyle was flat last week. This week…he just seemed off.

No question, as Baldie explained, with Deebo out, we needed to lean on Aiyuk more…5 catches in first half was excellent.. 1 pass , or was it 2 in entire 2nd half? No passes to #44 as I recall, only a handful to #85, Jauan got his share, and CMC could have had some passes. It was just weird as if kyle was not his usual self. Did the guy he mentored know kyle well enough to know what he was going to call? Who knows.

Last week was the wake up call. This week…i dunno…what DO you call it? Whatever, kyle has the horses for a legit SB run. Having a bye into the playoffs is a huge advantage. Coach needs to fix "IT" whatever that is and do it fast. I'll be saying the beads for him.

Great post! I agree some adjustments need made, especially when your star defenders are questioning your play calls. Need to change up something on defense to manufacture pressure.
He has the best talent in the league and fields the worst defense. Go figure that one. This POSER needs to be removed. A fake defensive coordinator. We need a real one.

Defense straight 2 scoops of vanilla in a cup. No cone, no sprinkles
Unfortunately there isn't a single coach on the staff currently that has the experience to take over the job. Doubt anyone out there left to fill the spot either

I've honestly never seen a coordinator be this destructive to an ultra talented group in the NFL. It's unbelievable. If you just did all of last years plays and calls and ignored him you would be infinitely better off.

Kyle's dumbass drank the Kool aid and brought this bum ass coordinator aboard. There was a reason that fool was unemployed. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Things that made our D the best D last season:

-Bosa
-Good tackling
-Hufanga's play making ability

Now:

-Bosa is MIA
-A lot of missed tackles in the last 2 games
-Hufanga is lost in the back end

Wilks is killing our elite D.

That's definitely a call-out from Shanny, if there is such a thing.
Wasn't there another Wilkes-Booth guy who also killed a good thing? Lol sorry but

Missed tackles is a good one. I think less zone coverage has led to less swarm tackling.
