Chris Maragos, former Niner, wins huge injury lawsuit

Shop 49ers game tickets
Chris Maragos began his career in 2010 with the 49ers. He then went to Seattle and Philly where he suffered a career-ending injury. He filed a medical malpractice suit against the medical team that treated him. In the suit, his lawyers successfully claimed that the doctors allowed him to begin training before he was physically ready.

The fallout from this jury decision will almost certainly impact the way doctors treat sports injuries. Erring on the side of caution may now receive more than lip service.

"Former Eagles safety and special teamer Chris Maragos was awarded $43.5 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit in connection with his career-ending knee injury, according to a statement released Monday by his attorneys. Here's what you need to know:
  • Maragos was diagnosed with a torn PCL in his right knee after suffering an injury in an October 2017 game against the Panthers. He had surgery on the knee, but in May 2018, an MRI revealed the injury had been getting worse and there had been a partial tear to his meniscus, according to the release."

This will get appealed, assuming such a thing is possible with malpractice suits. It seems like the jury made a non scientific leap that is likely to be overturned imo.

So he gets $50,000 on appeal. Juries are stupid. Tell me something I don't already know.
Don't remember him.

He was a pretty good Special Teams guy. Tough, aggressive, high-motor guy. Lacked coverage skills and became a victim of numbers, IIRC.

I agree he won't see all that money. However, the threat of a lawsuit will have an impact on how teams and med staff view rehab.

I think of Purdy's situation. I trust he has affirmed the fact he wants done whatever needs to be done to have a long career, even if that is TJ and he misses 2023.
$43.5 million is no joke! Maragos must be relieved to have received that amount in his medical malpractice lawsuit.

That amount seems too high for a borderline player. He probably would have been making $2-$3 million per year. If he had played the average career of 5 years or lees he would have earned $15 million or so Maybe $20 million tops.

$43.5 million is no joke! Maragos must be relieved to have received that amount in his medical malpractice lawsuit. I bet he went through a rollercoaster of emotions dealing with the torn PCL in his knee and the subsequent partial tear to his meniscus. It's crazy how things can worsen even after surgery.

If anyone wants more info about work-related lawsuits, they can check out oxnerpermarlaw.com. It's great to see that Maragos's lawyers were able to successfully prove their claim. This outcome might encourage other athletes who have faced similar situations to stand up for their rights and seek justice too.
