QB Sam Darnold is a Viking

The New York Jets are in the mix and fielding calls from other teams expressing interest in quarterback Sam Darnold and one of those teams includes the San Francisco 49ers, reports say.

Sources told ESPN that while the Jets have not turned away calls from teams inquiring about Darnold, they have not made any firm decisions regarding his future in New York.

Among one of the teams reportedly interested are the San Franciso 49ers, according to CBS Sports' NFL writer Jason La Canfora, who said Sunday that head coach Kyle Shanahan is "very high" on Darnold.

"Sources tell me 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan (is) very high on Sam Darnold," La Canfora said. "If that's a match, follow me here, the 49ers would be trading Jimmy Garoppolo, and sources tell me Bill Belichick would love to have a Jimmy G reunion in New England."

awesome find.. you see this a lot ppl get enamored in the draft process and it's hard to land a guy that high in the draft as we know well with TL

more than reasonable to think NYJ and CAR when he was in those spots was not a winning mix.

Remember he was the youngest opening day QB since the merger

he was not with the Saleh Jets it was the Bowles then Adam Gase Jets, then with Rhule

cant be worse than josh johnson

Sam Darnold is lightyears better than Josh Johnson. One thing about Darnold is that he can swindle some fans into falling in love with him. He makes some of the craziest wow, elite-level throws that few QBs can make and then follow up with bad plays like throwing boneheaded INTs or completely missing wide open schemed open receivers.

So like Jimmy G but with more arm?

Lol I was going to mention he's a lot like Jimmy except instead of living in the middle he lives downfield or outside of structure plays.

and instead of being a good QB like Jimmy... Darnold is bad.

Except he won't cost 22.5 million per year like Jimmy costs the Raiders.

Probably paying peanuts for a guy who could potentially start games for us, with potential. TL is injury prone so far, BP is rehabbing.
Strategically, this is a very good signing. We now have two healthy, experienced/somewhat experienced QBs for OTAs and training camp, as we wait for Purdy to come back. Darnold will have a legit chance to earn a backup role.

It also suggests that Shanahan is going all-in this season, again. We all still hope that Lance will be the real deal but the fact they made this deal sends the message that KS may not yet be convinced Lance will be game ready.

I know, that opens up the whole "he needs game reps" convo but this is about the 49ers being the best they can be now versus Trey Lance learning how to play.

I feel like they wanted him two years ago.

Could've sworn there was a rumor that 49ers inquired about trading for Darnold when he was a Jet.

I recall this was about the time he missed time due to a strange injury like mono.

Don't see the point?

I just feel like if we get to the point where Darnold is going to have to be our starter, the season is over. Will see what the financials look like.

SWH he's a #3 overall pick in crap environments where QBs go to die.. QB here is simple stuff by comparison.. you really can't see a 25 year old QB on bad teams having a new lease on life here?

My one and only point is that we better not have spent a lot of money on him. If he is being paid like a 3rd stringer, fantastic. I am all in on that. If he is being paid like a QB2 because he is better than everyone else's QB3, then I have a problem. That's money that could/should be spent elsewhere.

Don't worry Sam ain't gonna prevent us from landing the #1 FA on the market

I'm not worried about the past. Worried about what this could do to the rest of free agency. But like I said, if the money is fine, then I am on board.

There fixed it for you Niners418
Purdy's not going to be ready for the season. They always give these optimistic time tables, but we all know how it goes. Sam will be an okay QB2 in case Trey gets injured running up the middle again.

would be startled if they are paying him anything.. he has flamed out

Darnold knows this is his chance, a one year deal to rehab his value; if he shows anything here he can parlay that to another contract here or elsewhere
Just give us all the championships now

Darnold reminded me of a poor imitation of Favre. He has a good arm but he plays wild and out of control. He can make big plays and then throw the ball right to a defensive player. Maybe they can coach that out of him.
