Darnold was consistently the first or second-best quarterback on the team, whether in a game or in practice. He has a history of failing under different circumstances, Sam won the job this offseason.

if you understand how to look at an individual player and their responsibilities within their position and the system, then you realize that he's done a good job here in the preseason as a whole and apparently in practice as well.
if he does end up playing, hopefully it's just garbage time in a game we are dominating, I'm sure he would look the best he ever has with the talent and coaching we've surrounded him by.

Sam is one of the best backups any team in this league can have, few back up players you'd take over him - if any, because of his fit with this system.
i also understand what a change in culture/coaching/talent can do for a young talented player. Prime example, Alex Smith - Alex had just as many turnovers (I think one less) as Sam has in his first 5 years. Alex's first year with Harbaugh (his sixth year - just like Sam is going into), he was a completely different play and a reliable game manager. That's what I anticipate with darnold if he has to play.
No I don't expect him to be a baller and/or challenge Brock for the job. Nor do I expect him to be as good as Brock. That isn't why he is here.
