How is that cherry picking? Darnold had a higher ypa than both Jimmy and Brock on a much worse receiving, rushing and offensive line core.

His comp could be a Blaine Gabbert. Good physical tools, too inconsistent to be reliable but he does belong in the NFL, just not as a quality starter. I can see Darnold having a similar career. Gabbert is entering his 12th season so he's doing something right.

Darnold's advanced metrics were in the top 10 last year. Advanced metrics indicated he played better than Purdy and Jimmy last year.

What do your eyeballs indicate when watching them play last season?

dayswwneskoqnazfma, curious about your thoughts on why Darnold is not starting ahead of Purdy. If the stats say he's better and you say he's better, then why would staff have Purdy as the number 1 on the depth chart? Do you feel that you know something that everyone else doesn't?

Steve Young said the team chose Purdy to start, not Kyle Shanahan. My assumption is that Darnold will start this season if Shanahan doesn't like what he sees on offense.

Because there's more than one or two stats out there. There's hundreds. What you're doing is the epitome of cherry-picking. It's an argumentative fallacy, but I'm sure that's not something you can bother to look into, you're busy with a preconceived notion to prove.

Mike Tomlin is not worried about Brock. He is worried about Kyle. What does that say to you?

List the "hundreds" of advanced stats that measure QB performance directly then. I'll wait.

I see it as more like Steve Bono. A good backup who can come in and run your offense, but overall an average starter.

Who is "the team"? Inquiring minds must know.

I'm not going to entertain your bad-faithed argumentation. I'm only interested in pointing it out so that others don't step into the s**t.

Yeah, I can tell by your reply you didn't watch Darnold play last season. It's all good, no one did.

QBs with top 10 EPA and CPOE don't become backups.

good question, I do think he can be a real player, if he gains understanding of the offense, and consistency in decision making. one thing Sam talked about is how here it's very 'black and white' in terms of what the O is asking of the QB on a play by play basis. He mentioned this as something he likes, compared to other systems he's been in.

KS likes what he sees a lot and has for a while, some quotes:

"In May, there was a mini-controversy when NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco said the former Panther "might be ... the most talented thrower of the football that the 49ers have ever had." Shanahan didn't disagree.

"I don't think that's a big controversial statement," Shanahan told reporters in May. "Sam's an unbelievable thrower. He was born to do that."

On safer ground, Shanahan added that Darnold wasn't exactly handled carefully by his previous coaching staffs, an unquestionably true statement.

"I truly see Sam talent-wise as a top pick in the draft, just like he was," Shanahan added. "You watch his whole career and there's no reason to think differently. He hasn't been in the best situations, so we're glad to have him here."

Talk about pot and kettle. Did you watch him play last year? Watch his 2022 highlights and tell me what percentage of those throws did Purdy or Jimmy make last year? Those were elite throws and his numbers were elite tier.
