Prior to this trade, we had a still inexperienced QB as our only QB on the roster that would be available to OTAs and TC, perhaps even to start the regular season. Hence, we needed someone who could at least look like they could run the offense until Purdy gets healthy, whenever that might be. Darnold is AT LEAST that.

CMC comes to SF and then Steve Wilks. With roughly two dozen FA QBs available, Sam Darnold comes from Carolina to SF. hmmmm Coincidence? I think not.

It's pretty clear. His former mates, now teammates told the story that Sam can be a solid QB in this setting. I trust McCaffrey and Wilks.

links?

could be a lot of reasons he's here. For example bubkus $

Not a large body of work last season, but he made huge strides compared to the rest of his career. Career bests in TD%, INT%, Y/A, QB rating, QBR, and sack rate. The couple of games I watched, he actually looked decent, and I thought to myself "if Kyle had him I bet he could make something out of him."

Let's be real here, it is VERY likely that Darnold starts a game(s) for the Niners next season, just based on the history of QB injuries under Kyle. Neither Trey nor Purdy are 100% right now, so I think this is a really good signing with nothing but upside.

Thats just the thing. We may just need all these guys.Lets hope some of Brocks mental prowess rubs off on Trey and Sam. Lets support them all and hope they all succeed.
We're gonna be down to Darnold in the SB, hoping he'll be Nick Foles.

I think is had more to do with Shanahan really liking Darnold.

His 2018 game against Green bay is on NFL network right now. Looked like a future star that game.

I always liked Sam Darnold. I think this has been the most stable coaching and team he has ever had. I think he might stick around.

That is a given, but that link was a few years old. The fact the deal was made now says more. There were several moving parts.

Darnold is still real young, fit's right in with Trey and Brock going into the future.

The first paragraph is obvious. It doesn't need a link. We all know the situation.

The second paragraph should also be obvious. If McCaffrey and Wilks didn't like him, he wouldn't be here.
What do all these players have in common?

Daniel Jones
Kirk Cousins
Dak Prescott
Lamar Jackson
Aaron Rodgers
Tom Brady
Jacoby Brissett
Matthew Stafford
Kyler Murray
Derek Carr
Russell Wilson

That all had 2022 NFL passer ratings lower than Sam Darnold.

Seriously.

Zero issues with the signing.

certainly needed a solid vet in the room.

my only fear is he is it's yet another Shanny QB that can get you to the playoffs but can't win the big one.

if the Shanny era had a stud top 4 QB there would be 3 more trophies in the building.

That is a weird fear to have for most likely the 3rd string QB.
