The first game of his career where he had expectations, he s**t the bed. If he does it again in the playoffs, I could see the Vikings going back to their original plan with JJ.

I don't think they can franchise tag him . He is a free agent and isn't on his rookie contract

Wait what? The Vikings could absolutely tag Darnold.

I had no idea .

his tag would go for about $41 M

Which makes sense for them. JJ wont be ready and he can have another year to learn. Then they can decide if they want to trade JJ for picks ad give Darnold a long term deal or if they just want to cut bait from him.

I don't trust Darnold at all. I would not take him over Purdy.

If I were a Viking fan i'd rather take the shot with JJ with Daniel Jones as a backup then invest 41 million into Darnold if i'm not sold on him long term. Let him go to the Raiders and take the comp pick.

Agreed. We'll see what happens in the next game(s)

I hear you but the franchise tag at least gives them a year to evaluate since their first round QB couldnt even practice with the team this year.

Was he? I didnt know he was named the starter.

But even if he was, Darnold's season (especially if he plays well in the playoffs), definitely changes things.

let's see if you know what you are talking about

https://vikingswire.usatoday.com/2024/08/08/vikings-hc-kevin-oconnell-names-sam-darnold-starter-j-j-mccarthy/

from wiki:

McCarthy was named the backup to Sam Darnold to open training camp.[64] Following the preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, in which he threw two touchdowns, he reported soreness in practice and was found to have fully torn his meniscus in his right knee.[65][66][67] McCarthy underwent surgery to repair it and was placed on injured reserve, becoming the first quarterback selected in the first round to miss his entire rookie season due to injury.[68][69]

He looked like he was on track to be named the starter because he was playing great in TC/PS.

Who knows if it would have happened. Obviously Darnold wasn't getting benched if he started the season (with the way he played).
They can't bench Darnold unless he completely s**ts the bed, he played like they hope JJ can play.

good year for sam and he demonstrated he's a QB1. he just has to keep working and getting better. can't just eat sacks all day. the other QB flicks his wrist while he's in the grasp and incomplete pass. i hate that play, in the grasp and you flick the ball out of there. seems cheap when you are dead to rights, but that's just the way the game is. some guys are quick thinking in the moment, and some guys are slower to react and eat more sacks than they need to.

when i look at clubs, i see pittsburgh needs a QB. they have a good roster and no QB. so i see a fit there
