we don't know how the young guys will turn out...... I can't think of one conference having a strangle hold on potential, mixed with young proven players.
If we think back to the early 1990s The AFC had quite a few HOFs playing QB...and without looking it up, you might be able to cherry pick after the Joe Montana trade.
This is a guess because i don't quite remember the year Boomer was traded and i am going off the top of my head. I think maybe 1992ish
ok screw it...ill look it up...
Marino (hof)
Kelly (hof)
Moon (hof)
Joe (hof)
Elway (hof)
There was still some very solid qbs (in their era...that is key...tons of teams went around a 1 to 1 ratio TD to INT)
Boomer Esiason (6 time top 10 passing yards in a season)
Berine Kosar (4 time top 10 passing yards in a season)
then guys that threatened to be top 10 in passing
Stan Humphries (2 time top 10 passing yards in a season)
Jeff George (4 time top 10 passing yards in a season)
Neil O'donnell (2 time top 10 passing yards in a season)
Dave Kreig ( 3 time top 10 passing yards in a season)
We have to realize how different the ERAs are, Marino for example could go 24td 23ints and he is still Dan Marino. As 49er fans we think of Joe, Steve and Bono doing insanely good for a very long period of time...even jeff Garcia afterwards...and what they did compares to the efficiency you see in the modern game....but it was not always like that...so i went with top years in passing yards per game.
The HOF guys speak for themselves, but I don't think anyone after that translates well to the group that is now in the AFC. When you think of QBs...now we think passing attack, getting in the top 10 now.....i would think it is harder....everyone is throwing the ball. Getting to 7or 8 or 9 or 10 back then could be a better then average RUNNING team.
Then you have rule changes... my old eyes... I see pass interference non-stop in today's games. You can't obliterate a WR like you once could, but back then if you made any contact with a WR while the ball was in the air...you could be getting a flag.
So you have an easier time defending (after 5 yards), and more passing yardage today... the passing game has really grown up. Most top QBs today would torch the NFL of the 80s and early 90s.
