Well good first interview and Gregory left a few nuggets that caught my attention.

1. You can tell right off the back that he is well spoken, humble, and hungry to prove himself in a winning culture. He was clearly burnt out in Denver and depressed with the losing and direction led by Payton.

2. He will be better as a player later in the season than when he first steps on the field for the 49ers. We should not expect him to be looking like TJ Watt, JJ Watt, or any Watt when he first sees action in a 49ers uniform, and the coaches know this.

3. Goes with my second point. Gregory is just not getting fully healthy, but he still is rounding into playing with his full burst.

4. Coach Kris Kocurek is about to make the biggest difference in Gregory's football life by relearning him, or learning how to rush the passer the best way for Gregory's skill set. He talked about learning how to set his feet, play with his hands to the ground, and get the best bend from that position. It will be like Gregory was a high draft choice coming into the NFL for the very first time getting real coaching.

Btw I did like when he said the Cowboys offense looked spooked the way the 49ers were flying around on defense, and that got him excited to think he will get to do the same thing.

He had a very high Wonderlic score. He strikes me as a guy who is educated but continued to make a lot of bad decisions despite that early in his career. Hopefully he is past all of that because he had Top 10 pass rushing metrics in 2021 and 2022.

Well his main thing was smoking weed which certainly is not a concern of mine. By every account Gregory was loved and respected by his teammates in Dallas and Denver. Of course he is in a different state of mind nowadays, family comes first in his life which is always a good thing. I think him coming here will be very beneficial to him and the 49ers even beyond this season.

Loved watching Kris Kocurek work 1 on 1 with him in a recent video. Kris was teaching him some techniques and really trying to get Gregory to the next level.

49ers fans, who are among the least patient fans in all of pro sports will have to be constantly reminded that the 49ers don't need Randy Gregory to be firing on all cylinders in October or November. The 49ers can win their division without Randy Gregory. He is here to help this team in January and hopefully February. It's all about getting to and winning a Super Bowl. This is where Gregory is expected to make the impact.

Once he gets down how Kucurek wants him to play over these next couple of months, Gregory will be ready for the games that really matter.

Awesome. Excited to see this guy improve with this defense over the next few weeks

damn...I had this dude miss-pegged for sure.....

I think I called him a knuckle head earlier based on his past mistakes....this dude is level headed, understands his limitations and pragmatic. What I said was wrong and clearly off base.

I get it..he had issues when he was younger, but the dude sounds mature and grounded. Dude grew up.

This dude is a reminder for people like me that form an opinion, move on and never revisit it.

This dude is very likable...one interview later I am a fan.

Yeah, I did the same thing. I judged him based off of media reports and never really looked into him.

he seems articulate, level headed, rational, and ready to work. I can def see why his teammates really liked him. Hopefully he's ready to capitalize on this situation and make a big impact, especially so he can get paid next year.

its about as good of a situation as he can ask for to elevate himself

Same. I saw his suspensions and thought he was a headcase. He got caught doing recreational drugs. If anything the suspensions might prolong his career because he doesn't have a lot of mileage. The article below is very long and details his childhood, and how it led to him using recreational drugs as a crutch. To summarize, what I got out of that article is he's like Aldon Smith but he had the perspective to look inwards and eventually seek help. He's not a bad team mate or cancer in the lockerroom type of guy. It's never too late to turn the corner so I hope him being in a good 49ers lockerrom will provide the focus to apply his skills on the field.

His irresponsibility led to a divorce and alienation from his children. There was a period when he lived in his car. But one thing about Randy Gregory — he's always had a knack to turn the corner.
Gregory was between places to live and burdened by bills he couldn't pay, divorce proceedings, custody quarrels, rehab and another NFL suspension. Help was a phone call away, but it was a call he would not make. "I didn't want anyone to know how bad I was struggling," he says.
Get him in there. I want to see some pass rush.

That interview changed a lot of minds I'm thinking.

Everyone loves a redemption story! I'm rooting for him. I've always liked the saying "sometimes we aren't as good as we thought we'd be but we are better than our worst moment".

im hoping he balls out here, loves it here, and restructures his contract for less pay but guaranteed money. Sometimes making $8M here in a great situation Vs $16M in somewhere like Denver is better. lol I'd understand if he didn't but would be cool! A great work environment is important to a players mental health and energy. I'm hoping he loves being a 49er and helps us get a Lombardi!
