Randy Gregory, Edge, Tampa Bay Bucs

The 49ers want more production out of their defensive line, and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks believes Randy Gregory is the perfect addition to achieve the goal.

"After a short period of time just conversing with him, good person," Wilks said on Thursday. "I think he's going to fit right in with the culture that we have here. He understands the tempo and how we practice. I love the way he moves around and just his willingness to get in here at all times of the day, just trying to absorb and learn this defense, says a lot about him."

One surprising thing that stands out about RG is his sneaky power. The guy showed up weighing 242 pounds a few years ago for the Cowboys. That's 6'5", 242 pounds. Not a lot mass on a long, wiry frame relative to other edges around the league. Yet Gregory generates a lot of power with explosiveness, length and technique. I like this rep because it illustrates all of that. Jab steps to draw out the tackle's hands/stop feet; great hand placement inside the upper chestplate with a longarm. Dude has 34" arms and knows that he needs to get full extension, align his head and body behind that arm to get every bit of that 242 pounds into the tackle and continue driving his feet the entire way. Who knows how much that tackle weighs--300? 310? 320? Gregory is probably outweighed by 80 pounds yet still wins with power. Drake Jackson could learn a lot from Gregory. All that added weight is useless if you don't know how to use it.

That's textbook. He beat him so badly the T retreated so much RG's momentum took him to the ground because there was zero resistance. LOL
