He has no more guaranteed money on his contract. We can cut him with 0 money owed

Great trade then.

This is a high upside low risk move. If he doesn't work out, the team can release him with minimal losses. If Kyle and John are brave enough to ship Trey out of town, they can do that to Gregory anytime.

Shanahan would fire his son if he didn't like his attitude.

Fred Dean was traded to the 49ers mid-season in 1981…. during Cowboys week…

Yes, but Fred Dean was an elite All-Pro who was holding out on the Chargers for a bump in pay. I am admittedly not too familiar with Gregory, but I am comfortable saying he is not of the stature of Dean when we pulled off that trade with the Chargers. On the other hand, our defensive line now is already so stacked that a marginal upgrade given an opportunity to play with a top defense might really shine.

Of course he's no Fred Dean, but I still like the omen.
Let see what he can do playing opposite of Nick Bosa. He might be our healthy Dee Ford.

It really is. Denver is paying everything except $800k and we only moved back a draft spot a little in the late rounds.

gregory is super talented but a head case. If the leaders on this team and culture can keep him in line - excellent rotational piece that will help us a lot.
This is just the first trade with the broncos. The next one will be for Patrick Surtain

I'd push my grandma off a cliff if it meant we would win the super bowl.
He comes with some baggage but when he has been right, he has been a force.

It will be up to the vets on the team to teach him the 49ers way. This will benefit RG and the team if he is willing to listen.
If he doesn't work out playing opposite of Nick Bosa and next to Hargrave and Arik, in an excellent team culture, with a top position coach in Kocurek, then he won't get a good contract next season. He is now in prime position to succeed.
How many pass rushers does one team need? We need OT and CB more on this team. I'm not calling it terrible. Maybe it's even good. I just don't fully understand the move with some other holes to fill.

This move doesn't prevent other moves. It is just a piece that became available and ShanaLynch jumped on it. Good decision.
Immediately an upgrade over Ferrell.

It is about opportunities. Can you find an upgrade at OT or CB that will only cost this low amount of draft capital and salary?

The opportunity was there.
