He's a victim of his draft status much like Brock but in reverse. People expect a lot when you're drafted high and are reluctant to acknowledge skill when you're drafted low.

Dude has 2.5 sacks in 11 games with us, playing on a line with 3 other pro bowlers. He's just not getting the job done regardless of his draft status and name.

If Washington could have seen what was ahead, they take Herbert.
Overall, he has been a dissapointment relative to his draft position.

It's disappointing. When we made the trade there was a lot of hope we had finally found that bookend to Bosa that we've been missing since we had a healthy Dee Ford.

I'm guessing GMs knew he wasn't as good as his draft position suggests. Which explains why he was acquired for a low 3rd rounder.
When SF acquired him, I remember some using the logic that if he signs as an UFA with some team this coming offseason, that the 49ers would recoup the 3rd they used to acquire him. "They got him for nothing!". Not so sure he'd get a contract that would warrant a 3rd round comp pick.

It's really hard for me to tell what his potential actually is under Wilks. Had he been our D coordinator the past few years and Bosa was only getting 10 sacks/game he wouldn't have won DPOY and we wouldn't be paying him what we are now.

Offer him a 1 or 2 year prove it deal. See what we can do with him with a full off-season working on his game.

We offered him a half season golden ticket to a huge payday and we're getting what we're getting. He's lining up next to 3 dudes who have had 10+ sack seasons. I'll be really disappointed if they resign him after this season, period. I mean unless he comes up with 3 sacks or something ridiculous in the Super Bowl, but I just don't see that happening.

I'd rather spend it on another need…

Shots fired at chase. Ambry "Adam Peters greatest pick" Thomas was also half-assing it.
Kyle Shanahan's biggest disappointment about the 49ers' run defense wasn't edge setting. It was SF's lackluster pursuit, especially on the reverse to Williams

That's a good point. The only reason I can't give him the benefit of the doubt is because he was also criticized for his effort in Washington.

He flashes his skill set that got him drafted high. But he has to chase the plays down better in backside pursuit. When you see huge runs that is what usually happened. Someone fell down or they are dogging it.
