If young does leave, we could potentially get a better pick back for him than we gave up for him. Lol wild

"Let's assume Young is a rental for the 49ers, and signs a free agent deal elsewhere for, say, $23 million a year in March 2024. It's likely the Niners will get a third-round Compensatory Pick in return in the 2025 draft—unless they sign another high-priced free agent or two, which is unlikely given their current salary structure and need to re-sign their own top players. If Young leaves and the 49ers get a third-round pick in return, the pick would be likely be somewhere in the 97 to 101 range. Let's, for fun, call it the 99th pick.

So this trade could end up being:

San Francisco trades the 101st pick in 2024 to Washington

San Francisco acquires Young for the final nine regular-season games in 2023 and possibly some number of postseason games, plus the 99th pick in 2025.

Imagine getting the benefit of Young for 11 or 12 games—and then a slightly better draft pick than you traded for him."
Would rather keep him, than the dreaded 3rd round pick

We have hit on like 1/12 third round selections since Lynch/Kyle have been here. (Fred Warner).

id much rather keep young. I've always been a big fan of his and I'm hoping him enjoying playing here with Bosa (dear friend), that he is willing to work out a contract that works for us. Our team is crafty and we may just do what we did this year - change a bunch of base salary to bonus and spread it out.

still need to see how he does but I've always really liked young, big fan of his. Mountain of a man

Chase and Bosa could be this generation's Young/Stubblefield, except they're DEs not DTs.

So then maybe Chris Doleman and Roy Barker?

Those guys weren't with the 49ers for very long and were towards the end of their career. Chase and Bosa are entering their prime. But yeah, something like that.

Yeah but I mean Stubbs and Young were only together from 1994 to 1997, right? Didn't he leave after the DPOY award?

Doleman was with the 49ers for 3 years, I thought it was shorter. Yeah sure, Bosa and Chase, like Doleman and Barker. I'm down with that. Need to draft some replacements for Banks, Huf, Greenlaw, or whichever players the 49ers can't retain by paying Chase.
Gonna need some clarity here, if I can get it. The narrative over Purdy, and Lance for that matter, was always sample size. We only have 1 game from Young, but people are already tripping over each other to name the players who have been winning games for us that should be let go to keep him? His next payday will likely be based 90% off of what he does here this season, and the better he plays, the more he'll cost. I'm hoping he plays himself out of our budget, personally, because that likely means he contributed to #6.

Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis were quite the duo

If talking all time, I always like Jackson and Swilling

Defensive end is more reliant on physical ability than mental ability, first of all, and Chase Young still has incredible physical gifts. Second, it's not like Chase hasn't been moderately productive despite the injuries. His current PFF grade is 74.6, which is well above average. It was 78.4 last year, which is nearly a step below elite; the year before that it was 75.1, and the year before that it was 87.2. Keep in mind the middle two were injury plagued seasons. So, it seems his floor is above average, which is better than what we've had since Dee Ford was here.

So, I think it's fairly reasonable to expect at least continued above average play from him, if not better. But I do agree: him pricing himself out would be awesome if it comes with some hardware.

Could make the argument Doleman/Barker duo was their best .

Let's see how the stretch run looks, but the jags game reminded me of 2019. That alone is more valuable than retaining banks, Greenlaw, huf, Ward, etc.

Sign Chase and Aiuyk, restructure contacts where appropriate, draft o-linemen and DBs

If they keep this up, it has to be considered. I said I was expecting 4 sacks a game (average).
Time will tell.

His injury history still is a concern.

Morale honestly plays a bigger factor than I think folks realize sometimes. I mean, look at the Raiders after McDaniels getting fired. Their team was so relieved, it was a major weight off of them, and their defense -- while it's been against bad teams -- has only allowed 18 points over the past 2 weeks.

Getting Young and then Deebo + Trent back I think was a big boost in terms of mental energy for us. The mind is freaking powerful. It can help you go further than you expect, but in a bad state, can literally hinder you physically to perform below your capability.

Doleman and Barkers combined for 68 sacks with the Niners. Cedric Hardman and Tommy Hart combined for nearly 200. Hardman had 108 and Hart had 72. Some of their seasons were played before sacks were an official stat so they aren't always listed among the leaders. Hart had 17 one season with 6 in one game against the Rams.
Doleman and Barker were pretty good but not even in the same league with Hart and Hardman.

If we win a Super Bowl with him but can't afford to extend him. Just tag him next year and win one more Super Bowl lol

Hmm not realistic. A lot of the $40M we are going to roll over will be eaten up because we are over the cap $20M+ next year already. Then we need to reserve some.

taggjng a player is hard on a salary cap cause all the money is guaranteed and base salary. Meaning no cap flexibility.

this is a problem for the off season though. Right now we have young and Gregory for Pennie's - need to win it all right now and hopefully they get better as the weems go on.

It's especially magnified in the NFL where the margins are razor thin.
