I think we can agree that Kyle needs to add more to the staff. Its been absolutely ravaged over the past few years and they really need to build it back up again. I'd like to see them add a lot more young coaches to develop because they're starting to run out of in-house guys that they seem confident in as being the "next man up" in the future.

Agree he needs some new ideas and assistance with game planning like McDaniels. He gets stuck in groves and it costs him against great defenses.

That would have been Merritt but as we all know Kyle is his own worst enemy and his Ego will not let him learn. Causes great ignorance to not learn from his own mistakes or insanity by doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

If meritt is half as good at coaching as you are conjecture, he should have been hired on the spot.

How do we know he isn't amazing? No company or organization gets their hires right 100 percent of the time. The successful ones recognize it quickly and do something to fix it instead of letting it play out.

This is a wait and see hire, like they almost always are. At least we know we will not stick with a substandard performer as the firing of Wilks demonstrated.

My friend, compare his resume with Sorensen's side-by-side. It's not even close.

In ine statement you ask why Sorensen didn't get promoted sooner, but then you give the 15 year plus position coach a pass? Lol

My point is Sorensen was already in our building last year when we had a DC vacancy, but chose Wilks instead.

Then one year later we have a DC vacancy again, and after 17 days of looking, lo and behold the answer that's going to get us over that final hump was apparently under our noses the whole time!

It's just not a good look for a team that is trying to win it all right now. I'll happily eat crow but everything about this screams "plan D" to anyone who isn't insanely biased.

We call that the offensive line. Most of their offensive struggles in the past few years all come down to the same thing, struggles with the OL and inability to hold blocks when they really need them.

That's the biggest area I'm looking to see some sort of evolution in approach from Shanahan. They largely lost two SB's because they couldn't block Chris Jones. I want to see a greater commitment to building the OL now that they have a QB that they actually seem to trust and the gameplan doesn't have to be geared towards "protect the QB from himself" the way it was in previous years.

for the people asking why Sorensen wasn't promoted last year…one year in an organization likely wasn't enough. after two years in the organization, he would have a better grasp on what needs to be done.

i don't see Sorensen not getting the job last year as a negative. quite the contrary actually.

Like it - a lot!

Given Sorensen's experience as a player in this league and his direct, many years of experience with the Niners' D alignments/concepts and what they've done to be very successful (especially pre-Wilks).

I like the chances that this D and its playmakers will again be a top unit in the league, that they will be very tough vs. the run & pass while also continuing to generate turnovers.

Add in Staley's input/knowledge of certain concepts (Fangio-related?) and this D can evolve in certain areas while keeping the continuity under Sorensen.

Seems like a very detail oriented search to me and didnt just rush to a decision. Maybe 2 or 3 guys were close in their mind.

Last year Sorensen was a guy that had been on the staff for a year as just a defensive assistant.

This past season he took on a much higher profile role as the defensive passing game coordinator. That's the reason why I felt that he was easily the favorite if they went in-house. He has experience as player and coach,he has had two years to learn the 49ers system, his role grew greatly with the team in his second year and his philosophy and demeanor overall seem to be in line with what this defense has been under Saleh and Ryans.

Agree but that doesn't tell the whole story. A misunderstanding of the blocking scheme cost
us the late TD, not an unskilled offensive lineman that just got blown through. There is merit to the "Shanny overthinks it" narrative.

Neither am I. Part of me thinks this is just a bridge until we can possibly hire Saleh back next offseason.

Hiring a guy who has never called a defensive play in a game in his life on a super bowl caliber team is a bold move. If he s**ts the bed don't be surprised if Staley takes over at some point.
