Saleh was ROUGH year one, especially early on.

The problem runs deeper than Sorensen and Wilks and I think we have issues with the scheme itself.

The 3rd down defense was at it's worse under Wilks but it wasn't great under Ryans either. We haven't had a great 3rd down defense since Saleh's last season in 2020 where they ranked 3rd in the league.

Since 2020 the highest the 3rd down defense has gotten is 13th. Ryans, Wilks, and Sorensen were carrying on at its core Saleh's defense and I'm starting to think that scheme has hit an expiration date and we might need to look giving someone a fresh canvas to install something new and fresh.

I think there's truth to your thinking as well. In 19 our defense was new and did great. Now everyone knows what we do with the wide 9 and it has its weakness'.

We don't have Earl Thomas back there either... but I agree they would do well with some new wrinkles. The d line just looks mostly old to me. Boss is great but he's literally doubled with a chip almost every play or he's so aggressive he takes himself out of it.

can this new DC do that? I have no idea.
That was....GARBAGE! 3RD AND LONG MAN, 3RD AND LONG...GET OFF THE FEILD!!!!

Meh I don't think the d line looks old at all. The problem is we can't cover very long at a high level. Secondary is a much bigger concern than anything else.

I think we improve when Huff is back. Our Safeties now suck. That 97 yard TD should never have happened

Huff isn't great in coverage either. So will be interesting to see if it improves.

He had a great season two years ago. Last year he was just mediocre before getting hurt.

Hes great at what he's great at. Deep coverage isn't it

Brown needs to pick it up big time
We should have never had 2 safeties on JJ. Gotta have a corner on him at all times, and should almost always be Ward or demo

How much does he really improve the coverage back there that's certainly not his strong suit.

Can't argue with that, how do you even allow that to happen?

This. A dreadful defensive call. Seeing the overhead shot really demonstrated how bad it was. Brown was put in a lose-lose scenario. Either way, it was going to be a big gain to the crosser or to Jefferson.

Isn't Sorenson's specialty the Secondary?

Yes. Having Odom cover Jefferson in slot was some kind of decision. To his credit Jefferson punished that mismatch.

yep...29th game Odom played for 49ers, so we had enough time to coach him up....he should be veteran enough to have just committed a defensive holding at the 22 yard line...instead of the 97 yard td

This defense will never be elite if they don't do something about the Safety position. How much do you think Hufanga coming off a torn ACL can do for this team, its gonna be the same b******t. They need to go out and trade for one and stop being a b***h about the Safety position!!
