They thought Hargrave was an upgrade. Same for Collins. Be careful what you wish for.
But Collins didn't cost what Hargrave did nor did they have to give up high picks for him.
Also, it appears very likely they will take a DT very early in the draft.

I know that but they still thought both were upgrades. I can remember them saying they felt the D line was going to be much better with Collins and Floyd along with Hargrave. Obviously it wasn't. There are no guarantees that they will pick a DT that ends up being better than those guys. We can hope and that's about it.

I would've thought we could trade him before we release him?

This is such a weird release....he was by the far the best tackle on the line last year...
The only plausible explanation I can think of is that theyre expecting to draft a DT high (Graham ?) and sign another DT and he might not be a starter...and he wants to start. And they get to save a few million on the cap. The 5m dead cap hit is peanuts.

Would love to see an Allen/DJ Jones/Nolen DT rotation. Mason Graham would be great too if he fell.

Would like one of Allen or Jones, rather not spend money on two 30 yr old DTs with a draft like this though.

- NFL Pick 'em
I thought Collins played well this year, not sure why they want to release him. He was one of the DT I wanted to keep, but I'm thinking maybe they want to get alot better at stopping the run.

He was 7th in DT pass rush win rate.

FA won't impact the draft at all. And neither of those guys are getting huge dollars. Both are on a rotation.
FA is about this year. Draft is about the next five.

He could still be traded.

He was terrible against the run.
If we swapped him out for someone like DJ Jones, that would be a win. If we managed to grab a pick on top that would be icing.

Collins was good at pass rushing, not so hot as a run-stopper. You know Saleh wants DT's who good at PR but primarily can stuff the run. I can see Lynch signing DJ Jones...he won't be nearly as expensive now. The draft is outstanding for DL...guys who can do both. My favorite so far is Michigan's Grant. This dude has it all...size, strength, stamina. He'd likely be in a rotation that'd include Jones, Elliot, Kalia Davis & Anderson.

You can say that about every player that the 9ers sign or draft.
