He's been playing TE a long time now and he's surprisingly solid as a blocker. He was the stereotypical "huge arm, throw it a mile but can't hit the broadside of the barn" QB but he took to TE pretty well. He has a huge frame at 6'6" and 250 and is a reliable receiver with QB awareness in being able to identify openings in a zone and getting open.

This late in the offseason this is a pretty nice pickup.

Assuming Kittle was injured in the Superbowl and that is why he produced nothing; it proves that a good back up TE is an extreme area of need for the 49ers.

The 49ers don't have time to wait around for one of their 2023 draft picks to make the leap. It would be a tremendous bonus if one of them did so in the camp, but the addition of Thomas gives San Francisco a backup the 49ers know can come in be a difference maker right now. In another all-in year for the reigning NFC champions, that makes him a very important signing.

From what I've read, very average at best. He will be expected to block well here though. He's got the size, just not the mentality.

On the zone-blocking plays that are the foundation of the 49er running game, Thomas had the eighth highest Pro Football Focus run block grade among all tight ends.

You say a lot of random stuff, link pls lol

True, anyone know what is the price?

San Francisco 49ers show exactly how they feel about their tight end depth with Logan Thomas signing (atozsports.com)

Logan Thomas has made himself into a legit red-zone target. Not bad for a former QB.

The big knock against Thomas has been his ability to stay healthy, and that is way overblown. Brief history:

  • 2020: 4 years after converting to TE, Thomas has his breakout year. Ends up as the TE5
  • 2021: ACL injury ends his season early
  • 2022: First year back from ACL, calf strain in week 4 limits him all season and a rib injury in week 11 doesn't help. Poor fantasy finish.
  • 2023: Preseason calf injury
Thomas is 6'6, 250 and is ~90th percentile or higher in speed, burst, agility, etc. for TEs. He is 32, not too old for a TE, with significantly less mileage on his body than the average player due to his position change. There is almost no trend in Thomas's situation that doesn't point dramatically up. I can think of only two potential knocks on him - that he has produced vs bad defenses so far and that our offense targets WRs more than TEs. I think both concerns are negligible compared to what he has shown on tape and the situation he is in.

I like this a lot. Been a Logan Thomas fan for a while. He was always my cheap go to in FF and always produced for the cost. As TE2 you can do a lot worse. His blocking isn't great but hopefully George and Fleury can work on that.

At the same time...this is a move that makes the Latu pick seem even worse. I would love to know wtf they were thinking with that one.

Yes, he blocked on run plays but where was he as an option in the passing game?

This is one of the most stunning aspects of the Superbowl, that Kyle didn't get the ball in the hands of George Kittle more often.

I mean George is an All Pro game breaker.

Kyle needed to dial up some plays to George Kittle in the Superbowl. Find a way!!!

And it never happened, for whatever reason.

He wasn't pass blocking which is my point. I have no idea why he wasn't given the ball more. That s**t is gonna happen when you have a bunch of play makers and one football

Saubert? Why?

big red zone threat
LOOKS like Shanny got another toy here... Logan was a QB at VaTech before becoming a TE in the NFL.. he's that kid w/the powerful arm that Steve Smith had to check during the combine for throwing bullets on 10 yard pattern..

Shanny can now use the old " Cj 2 Pettis Deep Post " play that he often called during their days !!

LOL

Why was this guy still available on the clearance rack? Looks like someone Kyle can utilize.

Not sure. Gives them more options for sure
Very solid signing at a position of need. I expect Thomas to be a nice contributor
I wonder what his deal looks like, I figure it's just a 1yr vet minimum deal, maybe some of his base salary GTD like Tony got from the Vikings.

Age, plus he's not a big name. Ertz was on the clearance rack for half a season. Few teams value TE's and if they are over 30... might as well be a running back. That's just the market. There are the pass catchers and then the solid contributors. If you are one of the 5 in the former you are better off than the 30 in the latter. Cause there is a 10 million difference in what you are getting paid.
