He's been playing TE a long time now and he's surprisingly solid as a blocker. He was the stereotypical "huge arm, throw it a mile but can't hit the broadside of the barn" QB but he took to TE pretty well. He has a huge frame at 6'6" and 250 and is a reliable receiver with QB awareness in being able to identify openings in a zone and getting open.
This late in the offseason this is a pretty nice pickup.
Assuming Kittle was injured in the Superbowl and that is why he produced nothing; it proves that a good back up TE is an extreme area of need for the 49ers.
The 49ers don't have time to wait around for one of their 2023 draft picks to make the leap. It would be a tremendous bonus if one of them did so in the camp, but the addition of Thomas gives San Francisco a backup the 49ers know can come in be a difference maker right now. In another all-in year for the reigning NFC champions, that makes him a very important signing.
