How many of those were impressive throws?

Honestly, calling Elway the most overrated qb of all time is ridiculous as is calling Mahomes overrated. Elway brought 3 mediocre teams to superbowls before winning 2. His comeback wins are legendary as was his arm. I just don't think you can go only by passing stats and yards when evaluating qbs especially in that era.

Calling Mahomes overrated is just as bad. Does he have a great coach who has designed a great system for him? Of course he has. That's no different than what Joe Montana had with Bill Walsh and I don't hear anyone saying that he was overrated. Mahomes is f**king amazing.

He's also won the last two SB's and will probably be the first QB in NFL history to 3-peat in the Superbowl era next week. Sometimes stats are irrelevant.

He's being carried by defense, special teams, and refs.

Nobody does this for any position but quarterback. Nobody goes, "well, Julian Edelman has more rings than Calvin Johnson, therefore he's the best receiver."

Mahomes has the 2nd highest qb rating of all time. Sure he is on a great team. So were Montana and Brady who had HOF coaches and great talent around them. All of them are special and 3 of the greatest qbs to ever play the game.

Mahomes lost his #1 wr and #1 rb this year and still did enough to help his team to the #1 seed and another SB. You keep checking those Stats though for total yards though. LOL

They were the 15th ranked scoring offense in 2023 and 2024. Nobody thinks Brad Johnson was great for winning a SB with the Bucs with comparable statistics.

All of the highest QB ratings are from recent QBs. That's how the game has evolved.

Stat padding and three-peating? That's a first.

Why is it that when you look at all time greats in literally any sport in any time period, you can point to statistics to help make your argument EXCEPT for John Elway? I get it. Stats arent EVERYthing. But why is Elway the only player in the history of any sport where you have to completely ignore statistics if you want to believe he is one of the best? I mean really think about it. Try to come up with another player that is considered an all time great but you have to ignore statistics to reach that conclusion.

you can point to stats with elway. he retired with the most wins of any qb.

from wiki:
On May 2, 1999, at age 38, Elway announced his retirement from professional football. Elway is regarded as one of the top quarterbacks to play the game. He has one of the best winning percentages in league history (148–82–1), and was tied for the second-most Pro Bowl selections for a quarterback (nine) at the time of his retirement. Elway played in 22 postseason games with the Broncos, 21 as a starter, and led the team to victory in 14 of them. In those games he threw 4,964 yards and 27 touchdowns, with 21 interceptions, while also rushing for 461 yards and 6 more scores. He is currently 9th all time in passing yards,[37] 10th in passes completed,[38] and 12th in passing touchdowns.[39] His four total rushing touchdowns in his Super Bowl games are the most by a quarterback. He is also the second player to score a rushing touchdown in four different Super Bowls (running back Thurman Thomas was the first).
Elway s**t the bed until Shanahan Snr made him a game manager.
