In this era you need a stable of RBs, not 1 starter. Hyde hasn't ever proven durable. Plus Frank was niners heart and soul, you can't replace that. Leadership and character matter in team building
They weren't building a team, they were circling the drain. Would people really have wanted to watch Gore get the crap kicked out of him in Chip Kelly's shotgun based run scheme last year?
As poor as Indy's OL is at pass blocking, they were very good at run blocking, ranking in the top 5 in most run blocking related categories and gave Gore plenty of opportunities.
Indy's adjusted line blocking yards was 4.69, which was good for 2nd in the NFL. The 49ers meanwhile were dead last in the NFL at 3.46 yards. Based on their OL performance, his expected YPC was 4.2, he instead averaged 3.9 yards a carry. How much worse would he have been behind one of the league's worst run blocking OL's instead of one of the best?

At this point any desire to hold on to him is strictly nostalgia and nothing more. The team is in the midst of rebuilding and needs to develop a new generation of RB's going forwards.
