Retired. Chris Borland quit. Willis destroyed his feet playing his ass off for this franchise.
Call it what you want but quitting football at 30 when he could have clearly continued, while not at his peak level is not a retirement IMO like that of Joe or Gore or any other star that finishes their career in it's twilight.

Should Barry Sanders not be in the HOF?

He had already done more than enough to get in while being not just the best at his position, but arguably the best player in the league at any position during his time with no help from anyone else on his team. Considered by many to be the best RB of all time. I know that's up for debate.

Willis was amazing, but was he hands down one of the top 5 MLB ever to play? Don't know I can say that. Urlacher, Ray Lewis, Dick Butkus, Singletary, and Jack Lambert are hard to argue against.

Okay, what about Gale Sayers then?

Being a 5-time all pro and 7-time pro bowler in 8 seasons aren't enough to get in?
Willis is a fringe HOFer to me. I think that 7 Pro Bowls and 6 All Pros (5 first team), should be enough, but I do understand that it might not be.

On paper, you'd think it would be. Not saying he shouldn't get in, but I just know how voting and nominations don't always match up with that.

I think saying that Patrick Willis quit is unfair... And I don't believe that he could have clearly continued playing because even in his retirement press conference he states that it was ultimately issues with his feet that caused him to leave the game early which is also probably the reason why he wasn't playing at his peak level like you mentioned above.

Do you know him personally? Are you his doctor? If not, I'll take his word for it when he says that he was physically unable to keep going. No 49ers fan has any reason to doubt his dedication to the game or this team, he gave everything he had. He retired as a 49ers legend.

if he said he could not continue and could not play at the level of excellence he was used to. of course you believe him... as i said many times,.,,, he was faltering a bit in his last year... did anyone really want to see him stay to long and end up like willie mays. stumbling around in the outfield.. end up like franco harris. johnny unitas. roger craig. joe namath. tony dorsett, chuck foreman.. a shell of themselves. stumbling around on the same field they once dominated,, he retired on his terms and i am happy he did , as much as i was sad about it
Dont know how you can watch a man crying during his retirement announcement literally asking why he was given bad feet and be like, "yup that mans a quitter".

the guy was in pain just walking around. he dealt with it the last 3-4 years of his career and it was only getting worse.

Back then i was a total homer.. REFUSED to acknowledge anything remotely negative with the team. when some people were saying in his last year. willis looked unsure and just not himself. i ripped them, called them haters etc.. well. now we know. they were right. willis knew when to go. he did not quit. what a terrible thing to say, not you 789. he did not want to embarrass himself or the team moving forward. even if jh had stayed. he would have quit in my opinion
When I visited the HOF I remember saying to myself that some of the guys in there really didn't belong. It's a really subjective thing but I have always felt that it isn't necessary to keep putting players in who are marginal. My criteria is if I have to think about it too long and go back and check his stats then he probably doesn't belong in the HOF. I think it should really be a special place for guys that are at the top of everyone's list like Unitas, Montana, Elway not Matt Stafford or Eli Manning. They've had nice careers but I don't consider either one a HOFer. So many of the players in there are names you might remember but they don't jump out when you start thinking about all time greats.

Gore wont get in first ballot. Thise are reserved for the goats of the game. But i love gore.

Willis wont get in because he quit on this team.

Staley may get some votes but he wint get in.
I had no idea that some people actually think that Willis was a quitter.

"You've seen me break my hand on Sunday, have surgery on Monday and play on Thursday with a cast on," Willis said. "But there's something about these feet. And those are what made me who I am. They had you all saying, 'Wow, where'd he come from?'

"I know I no longer have it in these feet to go out there and give you guys that kind of 'Wow.'"

"As much as I'd love to win a Super Bowl and to bring number six back here, I have to be honest," Willis said. "I have to tell y'all that if I don't have what I know I need to give to my teammates and the organization the best chance to win, then I can't be out there doing that.

"And to be sitting on the sideline just collecting a paycheck, I feel like that would be wrong. So I stand up here today with that conviction. I understand the magnitude of what I'm doing today."

He stubbed his toe and quit. Screw him. Bowman was better anyway
