No matter who starts, if we start the season 0-2 (and I hope we don't) don't you think that QB will be benched before any more damage is done? Especially if they are lopsided games? I do.

Oh man, sounds like Hill is going to get screwed yet again.
How?
I just mean he'll probably end up starting Smith instead of Hill.
It's a QB Comp...May the best man win.

I would hope so. If coach showed us anything last year it was he wasn't afraid to yank non performers out of a game.

Good news for Alex Smith. the more time he has to impress the better. He must really have to burn those second stringers when he gets in there.
Fixed and agreed.

Im pretty sure he will get to play 1 game with and against the starters, but then again what the hell do I know.
But I do agree, it sounds good for Alex.
I hope they both can light it up.
If the competition does drag into preseason, it means that Smith has done enough to keep par with Hill. Hence, the longer the competition, the better it is for Smith.

EXACTLY which is why most teams don't operate this way. How in the world is a qb suppose to get into a groove with the offense doing things this way?? Welcome to the dysfunctional world of MS. He claims to have a playoff caliber team in June but is not ready to name the starting qb until the 3rd preseason game. BRAVO.

You have a point. I think that Hill showed enough last season to be named the starter. Plus, Smith is an acknowledged slow starter with a new offense as his old college coach attests. This would give Smith more time to get comfortable with the offense and allow Hill to continue with his development as well, in actual game conditions, not just practices, where we know he doesn't necessarily shine (see last year's "competition"). Then, if Shaun doesn't pan out, or even clearly bombs in preseason, Alex can get his shot and would be more comfortable with the offense to boot. Continuing this new competition, just 'cause Smith's arm is rehabbed and he's throwing hard disrespects what Hill did for the 9'ers and frankly, Singletary. It should be Hill's job to lose amnd the offense will gel that much faster. JMHO

sing said they would pick the starter by the 3rd preseason game. that doesnt mean it will take exactly that long. he didnt say we will pick our starter right after the 2nd game. so anywhere inbetween now and then the starter could be chosen. probably later that sooner unfortunately, but if one of them seems to have an outright upperhand before that set time, im sure that individual will be given the job. no matter what the outcome, all i care about is winning games and hopefully the one who has the most potential to do so should get the job. i do not believe sing or reye whould show favortism for a single player, especially if they are not the best one suited to take this team to the ranks of a playoff caliber team. and even more so with their jobs riding on it.

Uh, probably because there is no one.
Ok man. But just so you know I'm not one of those die hard message board fans or just looking for someone to kiss my ass because I know someone. I have been a niner fan my entire life and got lucky and one of my best friends became a niner and that's great for me. I also just want to bring some accurate info to this board for people to discuss. Take my info however you want but if you can only criticize my posts then don't read the damn things.
Say we take U at your word...how does this friend of yours feel about Alex? Will Alex be given a fresh start with the team?

He personally would give a slight edge to hill only because of they way we finished last year but he also recognized that all that happened in somewhat meaningless games. However he has no problem with alex if that's what happens. We have discussed this at great lengths.

Assumption or fact? If it is fact, then show the proof as most teams do have competition at the QB position no matter what. I think most teams operate the same way as Coach S.
Welcome to the dysfunctional world of MS.
Statements like this are why you don't get the respect you deserve. There is no need for it...purely emotional, opinionated, provoking, and just wrong. There is no proof of this.
He claims to have a playoff caliber team in June but is not ready to name the starting qb until the 3rd preseason game.
C'mon now! You got to be kidding us...you can't have playoff caliber team without a starting QB? My God man, just look at our own history. Once Steve Young came into the mix, Steve pushed the s**t out of Joe to the point that Joe became much better through the latter part of the 80s.
Alex Smith demonstrated enough in the off-season programs to warrant a decision by Singletary, Raye, and Johnson to let him continue to compete through TC and into the first two games of the preseason where, get this, they can evaluate Alex effectively and thoroughly to make the right decision for the team.
What the heck is wrong with that? I can see if Hill had the same abilities as Alex and was far away the most solid QB, but he isn't. Therefore, we have a competition.
Like my mom used to say, "Ay, Dios mio!!!!!"
We won't get any peace from you until Alex wins the job, we win the West and make the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
Well, that's what I hope.
Keep at it Sabrason, as most of us will be here to rebuttle your sometimes outlandish positions and points of view. You do have some merit and have some valid points, but most of the time it just seems like you want to get a rise out of people and your point gets lost.
It's all good, we are all family. The 49ers family that is.
Go 49ers!

I could give a damn who the QB is, as long as we win.

Agreed. But two games will give each QB a game start with other starters. This will allow an easier comparison. Deciding before the games would be a disadvantage for Hill, not known as a good practice player, and for Smith, to show if he can "win" games. The Aug. 23 decision date will give the starter three weeks of practice, starting and probably 3 quarters of pre-season game #3 and starting pre-season game #4 (usually for 1 or 2 drives).
