King's take.

6. I think I can't believe the sentiment out there for Alex Smith to win the 49er quarterback job. Unless Smith has had an arm transplant with Jay Cutler, how can anyone who has watched the last two San Francisco seasons think he's better than Shaun Hill? I'm not saying he can't win the job. But the sentiment in the Bay Area is so strong that Smith enters camp with the edge. It's not based on what has happened on the field. At all.

One of the greatest mysteries of the WZ and beyond... has any player performed so poorly and accomplished so little yet has been so vigorously defended and supported? I have never seen anything like it.

I for 1 don't really know what King is talking about. The sentiment in the bay area?? Well the sentiment I'm getting from my fellow bay area peeps is that Hill is the odds on favorite, especially to start. There is also HOPE that Smith will salvage his career, but this comes with a fair shake of skepticism. As for WHY there would be any shift towards Smith as a starter. The ONLY REASON I can see for this is the ON FIELD off season performance Smith has put on. Sigh Peter King, quit acting like yer some local know it all bro!!

Yup that's what I was thinking. He is a nolan nut hugger if I remember rite. That makes me dislike em. But this artical seems virtually unbiased, which when he usually talks niners, crap pours out lol

Beware the sudden agreement with an idiot...

Why the hate? Come on man can't we all just get along ha ha! Oh yeah calling people names on here could get ya banned. So just a fyi, and billy is a good dude man. Don't understand the hate lol

No name calling from where I sit.

Besides we all know King is an idiot so couldn't this be a warning to the Faithful?

LLike the old proverb says, you lay down with dogs you'll come up with fleas.

King was wrong on so many parts of this it's not even funny.

1) Most locals want Hill to start. Many of them just want Alex gone from what I have seen and heard last season. I listen to KNBR and it seems that most callers are ready to move on. I think that's dumb, but hey what do I know I live in Washington. lol

2) Smith played behind the worst OLines in 49ers history. When Hill got the nod last season he had a half game with a bad OLine. From then on it was about protecting the QB. So he had the benefit of better blocking and a dumbed down playbook to fit his attributes. Mmmmm seems to me that with Smith out for the season that OF COURSE, Hill was better. Smith didn't take one regular season snap. It's foolish to base Hill's prior to last season success against Smith's lack of opportunity last year. Especially if you're gonna climb out on a limb and state that Hill is better. Don't forget your limb saw on your way up the tree.

3rd) how many come from behind wins does Hill have v. Smith's previous seasons as the Starter? What, ONE? Oh yeah that just oozes confidence from the masses don't it? Smith at his worst looked like Hill at his best imho. But the fact is that Smith didn't have an opportunity last season, because he was done for the year by game 1. The team had NO choice but to stick with JTO or severely limit the playbook for Hill.

Which is why I do NOT understand all this love for a guy who has shown that he is a great backup QB. If Druckenmiller were still with this team and took over for Young like Hill did for JTO, would people want to stick it out with Druck?

Now granted this is a bit simplistic since Young is a HoF'er, but we're a fickle lot. If you aren't winning ball games for us and recently then we want you gone. Which is stupid. Garcia was a decent QB and look how many wanted to run him out of town on a rail tarred and feathered on a whiny beyotch assed WRs' say so. I was stymied as hell by that. But it happened.

So now King wants to tap into our collective psyche and suggest that Hill is better? Based on nothing more than Hill got to play while Smith rehabbed? King can suck my lilly white @ce. Geezus I hate that guy.

Wise words my man,the California guys are all just mad that we didn't draft Rodgers, like that would have made a difference.I have been a Niner fan for 30 years and the talent on the roster during Smiths first two years was as bad as I have ever seen it.I like Hill myself, but if he is the starter, then we still have QB issues that will need addressing next draft.I am puling for Smith to win the job because it then frees up our two first round picks for what we really need.If we can get both next year,I think we should go after,in this order,Eric Berry and then a pass rusher/nose tackle.

he had ted tollner not hos!!!! big difference!!!! and really iv said this too much. smith threw for more yards and more accurately against the steelers than hill did against terrible defenses...... fact. not to mention steelers had the #1 d that year.... iv posted too many links about this, so people can look for themselves

im sure there really worried about the disrespect factor. let the best man win..... imo go smith!!!!!!!! and if hill wins ill be ok with it.

One game examples are not what people are talking about when comparing players. They are comparing overall performance over sevral starts.

It is totaly denial if one can't give Hill credit for thinking on his feet, and making plays. Tollner wasn't out there on the field holding his hands, whispering in his ear..."ok, there is a gap there - run for a first down. Ok, those guys are covered, dump the pass off quickly to your safety valve." Players make those decisions in the heat of the battle, not guys up in the booth.

I don't think anyone is taking away from Hill's improvisational skills. He has that going for him, but I ask you to consider something... Alex does as well, and this was in spite of Nolan hovering over him and demanding that he run the play called, and keep it safe and simple. I point you to the Seattle game, when Alex shrugged off the DB sack attempt, scrambled left and threw a tight pass to Gore at the pylon for a TD. Improvisational... hmmm... hellz yeah. You could just as easily point to the game in AZ for Hill. He considers running... holds up, and Brett-Favre-flicks the ball underhanded and it goes right to a defender for the INT. Ooops... improvisational... doesn't always mean a good thing. It's just been SO long that people's memories get rather fuzzy and because they want to... they forget the good, remember the bad, and exaggerate the heck out of it.
Hill or Smith will hold down the QB position for 2 years until we can groom a new QB that we will be drafting in the first round of the 2010 draft.

Hill and Smith are nice guys but they do not have the “it” factor. Smith does not have the emotional make up to be a great QB and Hill does not have the physical skills. I wish we could combine the two and have a QB with Smith physical abilities and Hills mental attitude.
Hey look, a thread about Alex Smith! Why aren't there more of these.

Look, everyone OUTSIDE the WZ who covers the niners or talks about the niners has said essentially the same thing: the last time we saw Alex Smith play was the end of the 2006/beginning of 2007 season when he was coming into his own, really playing like an NFL QB and making big plays, and it looked like he could really be good. Everyone was really excited about him Then he got hurt and has been hurt ever since. Now he's not hurt.

Only the people on this site thinks he sucks and is a bust.

Now I'm not saying he should be the favorite, because Shaun Hill really has shown to be a good NFL QB, and should be the favorite going into camp, but when you have a #1 overall pick on your roster who's been hurt and is poised to continue the progress he was making, you would be stupid not to give him the chance to see what he can do.

Ok, then how about the years before that? The arm transplant comment is sadly accurate, but more to the point it's the poise in the pocket and ability to "feel" the pressure and even just the game around him. He hasn't shown it other than one or two flashes.

If he doesn't have IT he just doesn't.

What "pocket"?????????????????????????

And what I think you mean by feeling pressure, is the 300lbs D-linemen landing on him.
