Kory Sheet looked awesome. He looked better than Coffee in my opinion. Kory averaged 5.1 yards with the 3rd string line blocking for him. By game 3 you all will see. Shaun Hill and Kory Sheets.

Dude Hill was staring down receivers tonight,he cannot do that or he will get hurt or throw the pick.If Smith was doing that you would have a cow.

True, no doubt. But Hill was given one chance and was 2/2. Smith was given 4 chances and only scored when he started on the 11 yard line. One chance versus four chances is not fair. In my opinion, Hill looked far, far, far superior. He did not have one single 3 and out. Alex Smith had three of them.

Im falling to see how superior is holding on to the ball for 6 seconds. Not superior. Drew Bress Superior. Shaun Hill just about even with a guy whose been outta football for two years. he was not 2/2 because he had 4 opportunities to throw the ball.

Please correct me if I am wrong, Hill had one series, and scored 3 points, and was 2/2. Smith had four chances, and scored 7 points, when he began on the 11 yard line?

Why did Hill get one chance? Why did Smith get four?

I feel bad for Clayton, but injuries happen. I thought Sheets and Coffee played well behind a suspect O-line.
Smith looked like a different QB tonight. I hope he continues to improve as it will only help the team. I thought Hill did a good job also, but he didn't play near as much as Smith. Kinda makes you wonder which QB Sing is leaning towards.

I'm thinking Hill since we saw so little of him. Makes me think its Smith's job to win rather than Hill's to lose

Smith has 4, that is 4 chances. He scores once, when given the ball on the 11 yard line.

Hill never had a 3 and out series, Smith had 3 of them.

Be real man, why did the coaches pull Hill after one series? Because they know Hill is better. They hoped Alex would step up, which he didn't.

They pulled hill because they know what they have in him.Alex got more time because they do not know what they have in him yet...pretty simple. If Hill continues to stare down his receivers like he did tonight, some of those floaters he throws are gonna get picked. This is disturbing because he didn't do that last year,in fact it was one of his strengths.I do not like to see regression in a starting QB.

To me Coffee looked like another M.Rob (2 yards and a cloud of dust). I dont think he is better than sheets, thats for sure.

Alex looked horrible. I was at the game. I saw him miss recievers and place the ball in places that didn't allow the reciever to make plays. He was booed at least twice at Candlestick.

Thats all I can think of now.

Alex didnt look horrible, but definitely nothing special. I think Shaun will keep his job for the moment. Alex still looked hesitant which was disappointing after all the positives from camp. But it was the first game.... i will wait for game two.

very rational summation. i think alex had a bit of first game jitters

I agree with my 209 bretheren that Smith looked tentative, especially early on. I'd like to see Hill play more. If the plan is for Smith to start the next one, hopefully Hill will get ample playing time as well. The only bad thing about Huard playing well was that I wanted to see Davis throw at least one pass.

Yes I was hoping to see that as well. But on the other hand we got to see more of sheets. Which probably wouldnt have happened if clayton didnt go down. I see no reason to play Huard after this game. We know what he is capable of, Davis should play 3rd for the rest of the pre-season.

I need to see more of Alex before I label him anything. Alex should start the next game and Singletary should name the starter after that. Alex needs to put together a stellar performance to change anybodies opinion.

And what do you do with a guy like Brit Miller. His blocking seemed ok at best but he definitely played well as a receiver. I think he's definitely a PS player.

He took 2 sacks, the first one can be excused cuz Zac casey sucks but the second one man, Reminded me of JTO. Im being real. It's the first preseason game. Only time will tell why they pulled Hill after the first drive. Maybe their trying to get Smith in the swing of things? or their trying to save their starting QB but can you tell me you know the real answer? No cuz unfortunately my brother we're not Mike Singlertary.

It was also against the 3rd string D.

Very true. Sheets will not get a fair shot until the 3rd preseason game. This game opened their eyes. Sheets will get more carries next week, and will once again outshine Coffee. By the 3rd week he will be splitting carries. Sheets did well running inside even though he excels at running outside.

Speed kills, but Coffee simply runs between the tackles better than Sheets. That will give him the edge as the second runningback behind Gore.
The 3 sacks we bad. One Hill should have thrown. They all were questionable if it was line or holding on to long. But I think Hill deserves the starting job. Smith is frustratingly all over the place. Good pass, bad pass, bad pass, good pass. Enough with this bust. HILL!

Morgan and Davis look ready to go. Its going to be crazy to see who the WR will be this year. Very good position as a team and fans.

Coffee and Sheets. Wow :)

You're nuts if you think they were even. Anyone who knows an inkling of football can see that Hill is very far ahead of Smith in this competition. Hill looked exactly how he always has and how I expected and Smith looked exactly how he always has and how I expected. Hill made smart, quick decisions and used his head to make plays (outside of the one sack where he held on way too long). Smith still looks like a frightened turtle out there with happy feet who can't make the reads or the plays. Christ, his first play back in a game was a sack lol. No offense, but if you think Smith is even decent or has a shot at being the starter Week One, you're nuts. Hill may not dazzle but he gets the job done and is good enough for what we need from him.

As for Coffee, I agree with the M-Rob comparison, but it's way too early to tell. Coffee runs hard, but I wasn't impressed. He got yardage here and there and had a few nice plays, so that gives me hope. I think he can be a good back but he needs more time of course.

Overall, the team is right where I expected them to be offensively.

Smith was 5-7,and one of those was a throw away to avoid a sack,so yes,you should watch the game again.Coffee ran 14 times for 67 yards...you sure you were at the game? How many beers did you have?

4.7 per carry is a little more than "2-yards and a cloud of dust". As the observant, new guy so eloquently put it.

I don't get it. Hill was 2/2, and scored. The 49ers didn't punt once while he was in charge. Obviously he held the ball too long on one sack, he deserved that sack. But a lot of QBs do that. It is not a good habit, but it doesn't happen very often. And he made up for it on the next pass play. Smith on the other hand, could not convert and made some very bad passes. Hill did not make a bad pass. I now realize that the 49ers know Hill is the better choice. They are hoping that Smith steps up, but I don't think he can. He is too nervous, and doesn't have "it."

bye bye Keasey.

Seriously. Obviously, the starter will be Norris. But Miller looks like a MUCH better project than Keasey. I mean, this is the guy's first game playing on offense. Not a bad start. So far he looks bigger, faster, and more sure handed than Keasey.

Kasey was terrible but Miller looked good on those passes. But i wasnt paying attention to his blocking to be honest.
Did anyone else kind of want Den to convert the 2 point conversion? I wanted to see Nate actually throw the ball and try to drive down in to FG position. Would of been fun to watch...
