Hopefully we can poach a potential ST Coordinator from another team like everyone does to us.
The new kick off rules raise a few interesting selection points of discussion.

I think the defenders will be okay in a team reliant on offensive players that can block.

The kick off player will be interesting with 3 times the amount of kick offs returned projected and the chance the kicker needs to tackle. Back to Mitch? or Moody beefs up his defense.

The 2 returners will need a few extra characteristics to succeed. This is where the genius of HO comes in to play with the amount of quality WRs and RBs on the roster.
They will need speed, ability to catch and run in one motion to get the momentum to break the line, size to get through or under a defense that does not have as much free space to run, smarts to make the right touch back decision or run and communicate like a doubles tennis team.

Those that are closer in player analysis on the team please tell me who you think will do well as returners?

How will onside kicks be determined or have they been banned?

Banned. Dance offs when a team decides to do an onside kick

  • Onside kick:
  • 4th quarter begins, the team trailing has the opportunity to declare an onside kick to the officials
  • Current onside kickoff rules would apply. If onside kick goes beyond the setup zone untouched, kicking team penalized for UNS; return team would start the drive at the A20 yard line
Looks like the reporter that asked whether Deebo wants to be one of the kick off returners might have touched on something.

"Looking at it, it's kind of weird, but I feel like, on the side that we on, for us, the returning team, I feel like we have a real big advantage of you make one guy miss," Samuel said. "I mean, it's just you and a kicker, and nine times out of 10, the kicker's not making tackles. So I'm pretty sure people will try to turn skill guys into kickers at some point if it continue to go [this way], just so they have a last-line-of-defense tackler."

Also the point I raised earlier about the kicker needing to be able to tackle will be important.

Will they risk the punter who can tackle or see if another D can kick? You can replace a D but a punter rarely has a reserve if he gets hurt tackling. And non specialists can rarely kick. If they can then they are usually very good at another aspect you don't want them to be removed from i.e. CMac.

The specialist team makeup will see some changes.

Thoughts?

The Aussie Rules converts to NFL/College punting can tackle but even in that other game one was suspended for tackling too hard!!!
Want to see an improved ST this season. Be at the very least solid and not a part of the reason games are lost (SB flashbacks).
100000% GARBAGE!!!!
terrible showing today

I'd like to see Niner coaches actually give our punt returners the green light instead of demanding they fair catch seemingly every punt.

The coaches called it? I would have thought in preseason that's likely on the player.
It doesn't look very special to me.

No tackling in practice and special teams is usually a necessary evil where they put the 2nd and 3rd stringers.
In preseason its even lower down the care factor list for the Niners it seems.
Niners were the worst in this phase for parts of last season and in yesterdays preseason game.
But why should the team care? Still made it to the SB!
Clicked on page 1 by accident. Didn't realize the date of the OP…. However it is still 100% accurate in describing our special teams for the last several years.
