Yeah, players liked them & Coach Seifert was already a superstitious dude, so they asked the league (probably in October, between the Philly blowout and the BYE). I think once they won those two road games against the Lions and Falcons, was when the aura of them playing better in them started.
It helped that the league wasn't such dicks regarding uniform changes back then (nowadays you have to give 2 years notice). Probably since it was scheduled for all teams to wear throwbacks for at least a couple games that season helped to just keep making them (Wilson were the jerseys/uni suppliers for the Niners that season).
