It was actually JUST the 1996 season. By 1997, they had already switched to gold pants.

The FIRST game with the shiny gold pants was the 1998 season opener vs the Jets where Garrison Hearst had the game-winning 96 yd TD in overtime. We know it was the 1998 season because that was the first year of the return of CBS's NFL broadcast rights after they had lost it to FOX after the 1993 season. The 49ers-Jets season opener was the marquee game for week 1 on CBS, which now covered AFC broadcasts, taking over from NBC who lost their rights after the 1997 season.

I remember it was sort of a surprise to the home fans at Candlstick since there was no hint of the team switching to them in the 1998 preseason (the team had worn the 96-97 white jerseys w/ white pants for all four preseason games in 1998).


^ I know for a FACT they wore white pants for ALL of 1997 because that was the season Young and Rice were both injured in Tampa Bay, then the team won 10 straight games, while Rice eventually made a miraculous comeback from what was assumed to be a season-ending knee injury. *(Note that Steve Young's jersey doesn;t have the 50th Anniversary patch).



^ Rice re-injured his knee though his first game back, which was the MNF game vs the Broncos when Joe Montana had his jersey retired.

1996 : team switched to what was assumed at the time to be a one-year "50th Anniversary" uniform with darker cardinal red, a redesigned hemet, white pants and a 50th Anniversary patch.

1997 : the uniform from the previous '96 season is retained, the only minor changes being the removal of the 50th Anniversary patch, and a slight modification of the numeral font (the 1996 ones had slightly rounder numerals that were worn for some games).

1998 : 49ers wear their usual white uniforms with white pants that they have used the past 2 seasons for all preseason games, with nothing indicating or hinting there will be a change from the past two seasons. Then, the team surprises everyone and debuts a new design of shiny gold pants (vs the matte beige gold of the 1980s uniforms) in the season opener. The new gold pants are worn for all games thereafter until 2008 (except of course for the 2 throwback games at home from 2002-08). Despite some expecting the 1996-97 white pants to be retained as an alternate for the team to wear (like Tampa Bay does with their alternate pewter and white pants) the team has not donned those white pants since the final preseason game in 1998.

just noticed the cardinals have a new black alternate uniform... im pretty upset that they beat us to the punch.... the packers and the bears are other teams that will have a new alt uni

No they didn't. Up til the end of 2008, the 49ers did have an alternate that was worn twice a year, namely the 1980s throwbacks (but since then a third uniform is on hiatus as the 2009 redesign closely resembles the 80s uniforms). And you're a little late since Arizona released those black alternates during the draft.
