Because they were a one time uniform for the 75th anniversary of the NFL. The 96-97 uniform was an attempt to modernize that uniform
IMO, it was a total failure. The change to the gold pants in 98 (and the tweaking of the numbers) fixed a lot of the problems with that uniform.

I actually don't see any problem with the 1996 jerseys. They only look slightly different than the 1994 jersey, my favorite too like many others, so even something CLOSE to those I'd be extremely happy with.
