Marathe's ascension coincided with the departure of Walsh and director of football operations John McVay, which could have been more than a coincidence. Privately, neither liked the statistical approach Donahue espoused. Marathe and his computer shot down Walsh and McVay's trade proposals during the 2003 draft. This didn't sit well with either man, who had built the 49ers' success partly on their impulses.

If he was willing to say no to a legend like Bill, even as a virtual neophyte, what is he willing to do now with far more power?

The article seems to be written out of context. He wasn't "shot down" by Marathe specifically. He just provided some computer model that said the trade was a bad idea. I'm assuming John York or Donahue shot him down?

Whos fault is it really? The guy who makes the data, or the guy who interprets the data and makes decisions?

NFL insider Ian Rapoport may be baffled by the difference in the national and local opinion regarding Paraag Marathe, but Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee clearly is not. Barrows joined "Murph & Mac" on KNBR 680 this morning to touched on the topic of Marathe and the frustrations surrounding the 49ers executive.

Barrows was asked what he thinks of Rapoport saying that Marathe is highly respected around the NFL. "With what Paraag does, the contract, you know, he's their top contract negotiator and he's their salary cap guru," Barrows said. "In those realms, he's great. I don't think there's any complaint about that. Remember, the 49ers of yesteryear, when you covered them Murph, had all sorts of salary cap issues and they were bumping against the cap and they had to cut guys left and right. That was that year when they had to get rid of [Terrell Owens] and Jeff Garcia and Garrison Hearst and Derrick Deese all in one fell swoop. Once Paraag took over, those issues went away.

"The issue with Paraag among coaches and GMs is when he starts to sit in on the football meetings and they are like, 'Why is the non-football guy part of this meeting?' And apparently, that was an issue for Chip Kelly this year as well if you read that really good Yahoo! Sports report that came out yesterday.

"If Paraag is sticking to the things that he's good at, I don't think there's any issue with him. The issues have come up in the past when he's dabbling with football-related matters."

You can listen to the entire interview on KNBR 680.

It would seem that Marathe will be "dabbling with the football-related matters" when it comes to finding both a new head coach and general manager. "Paraag will be with me in the interviews," 49ers CEO Jed York said on Monday. "We've certainly done research together and will be moving forward."

The final decision will be York's – whether or not the team CEO is qualified enough to make such a decision. "Ultimately, the decision will rest with me," a confident York said

This is all anyone is saying. This dude is too involved with things he has no business being involved with.

It says pretty clear as day that his data opposed the instincts of two guys who are legends in their field, who had built Superbowl winning rosters. Marathe had no business ever being in that room in the first place. Now that he has an absurd amount of power, we know he's been interfering directly into the football side of things pretty extensively as virtually every single coach has had issues with him in the past. An article came out today talking about Chip not liking how involved he was. It all follows the same pattern. The guy is controlling but doesn't know what the f**k he is talking about outside of contracts and the salary cap.

Jed and Paraag sitting in on player and coaches meetings and dictating everything from play calls to personnel, these poor coaches. The only time it worked was when there was a "difficult" head coach who didn't "work well with others" to point out to these guys that the meetings were not for them.

Ensatsu gotta be a relative of Marathe

Jed needs to grow some f**king balls and run the team like a man...clearly Paraag doesn't not s**t about football personnel, but is a wiz with numbers...stick to contracts and business operations nothing more.

Same with Jed get the f**k out of coache's meetings your not a coach and neither of them should be there.

Time to grow up Jed it's now or never...if they make another bonehead decision regarding GM/HC its gonne be an even bigger s**t storm. Hire them and get the f**k out of the way!

Yep, Paraag should only be talking with agents and no one else.

Paraag Marathe, is that you

And my questions stands, just what type of proof would suffice for you?

He should be working with the GM, the owner and players agents. No reason for him to be in the coaches box, coaches office, in team meeting rooms, in the locker room...etc.

I already said a few pages back that I don't really agree with Jed or Paraag sitting in on interviews for head coaches. That doesn't make any sense to me.

The presser clearly showed he has not changed.

In fact, he went from:
"You should hold me accountable"

To:
"I own this football team. You don't dismiss owners, I'm sorry but that's the facts."

people seem to be reading too much into paraag. all the guy does is salary cap. I don't care what a local columnist says. I care what a highly respected nfl insider that has no personal agenda thinks about a guy.

Then he wouldn't have the title of EVP of Football Operations.
