Webzone: Paarag is cheap!

Paraage & Co. pulled out a contract for Sherman within hours of talking to him, that both parties were comfortable with—that's the culmination of an excellent FO player/team contract negotiator.

I have to think with Sherman negotiating his own contract must've been very thorough and careful in dealing with the Niners, yet he was able trust Paraage's experiences enough to iron out an agreement that was advantageous for both, taking account of his situation, without feeling like Paraage will pull a fast one on Sherman.

It's more than just contract numbers for Paraage, it's personality and character of Paraage too

I'm sure he already has formulas setup where he just enters the players profile and injury status and the contract auto completes.

Strategy of what? Free agency? Draft?

Glad to see ShanaLynch are far more open to analytics as a tool for both.

We have, when I came in — you think about where we are, we're in kind of the epicenter of innovation. And the Niners have always been as a team of innovation. So we've got people like Paraag, who handles our cap, but also kind of looks over our strategy. So we've got a great research and development — I call it analytics, they don't like that, they like research and development.

The previous regime wasn't really using them. I figure as long as they're here, we'll see what they can bring. And we found that it's been incredibly valuable. And we've tried to kind of intertwine them in our scouting process. Kyle's bought into that.

And so, we are using that, but ultimately, we look at the film. One of the things that I mentioned is that Kyle has a great — and his staff, they've been together a long time and they've run the same system. So they've been able to articulate to me, our front office, our scouting staff: here's the characteristics we're looking for at each position. And then I think the same on defense. Robert Saleh came from that Seattle tree, and so they have a real good understanding — I feel like that's why we were able to build such a great defense down in Tampa. We did the same thing for years, and when you do that — you look at teams like Pittsburgh, they've been running the same defense forever, they know exactly what they're looking for.

So I think that's been a big advantage. We've got to continue to make that as such. And then the way we're working as a front office with our coaches. That's something Kyle and I signed up for, to do this thing together, and I think we've had great collaboration. If we continue to do that, I think we can continue to get better. We got in this thing to win championships, and we're building towards that. It's not a finished product by any means, but we do feel like we're getting better, and that there's a really exciting vibe here.

I can see Analytics fitting into getting players that *fit* the *system.* I know in baseball, the base hit vs the home run analytics have changed it a bit. I think Analytics would be helpful in evaluating undervalued players, specially at the offensive positions. I don't know how analytics would work with defense though, since that's such a talent weighted area vs scheme. Maybe the combine numbers would be a better Analytic subject regarding defense? Hmmmm...

There was a great interview on KNBR with Paraag I believe it was like 2 years ago. But he mentioned what he does exactly and its pretty awesome. He has a book of all probabilities for each play i.e. What are the most common plays being ran on 3rd and 1 etc. It's a variety of analytics and research and development into players size/attributes along with the probabilities of each situation- down/distance

I'm betting they have a whole department on *rules changes.* I remember Harbaugh doing some unusual things and trying to take advantage of some rules in the playoffs and in critical games. I hope they are pouring over the rules changes regarding helmets because I think that changes the dynamics of tackling and pass defense. I think it moves the nfl towards more of a basketball type of pass defense vs letting them catch the ball and slobberknocking them out of the catch (as a famous 49er DB used to say). If anything, after the Basketball season ends, the rules analytics guys can talk to Steve Kerr about defense *basketball style.*

I think Kyle and John take us to the next level in terms of analytics and how they play out in football vs the rest of the league. Harry Edwards of UC Berkeley is tapped to deal with the player issues, and Paraag of Stanford University is tapped to do the analytic's strategy. I think the fact that the 49ers are next to two premier reserach and development institutions, is one reason the 49ers have been always at the cutting edge of change and innovation.

Interesting bit at the end of this CBSSports.com article:

Some of the most integral people in an NFL team's front office are also the most unheralded. That's definitely the case with Brian Hampton. As the 49ers' long-time director of football administration and analytics, Hampton's responsibilities include negotiating player contracts and managing the salary cap. His fingerprints were all over San Francisco's free agent signings with team-friendly contract structures.

Brian Hampton is the head of the salary cap department, while Marathe is the capologist, he's the one who structures the deals. Hampton negotiates terms, of course I imagine together they're a damn good formidable team.
