Some of the most integral people in an NFL team's front office are also the most unheralded. That's definitely the case with Brian Hampton. As the 49ers' long-time director of football administration and analytics, Hampton's responsibilities include negotiating player contracts and managing the salary cap. His fingerprints were all over San Francisco's free agent signings with team-friendly contract structures.

Brian Hampton is the head of the salary cap department, while Marathe is the capologist, he's the one who structures the deals. Hampton negotiates terms, of course I imagine together they're a damn good formidable team.

Agreed. Very fortunate to have them navigating the salary cap for our team.
Contract God.
Some people will scoff at this but Paraag will probably end up being a GM somewhere eventually. He's been working in and around GMs and their scouting departments since 2001. He hasn't done the same work as them per se but has learned and developed his particular skillset with both good and bad FOs. Roseman the Eagles GM used to do the same thing Paarag does before becoming GM. He's done some great work especially since terminating the Chip Kelly experiment.

I think Paraag could have had a GM job already if he wanted one. Ultimately the economics of the game is his specialty, and I think as long as the 49ers pay him what he's worth he'll stay where he's at.

GM would be a step down from EVP of Football Operations/Chief Football Strategist
LOL. Team-friendly is his middle name.

Geesh...

Agents crying because the players are signing prove it deals? Have some faith in your guys and it's not an issue.

He's a good cap guy, but what exactly does he know about football? Can he scout players? Does he watch any film? Do you really want someone like that running your football operations?

I like him. He's good in his role. That's about it.
We are winning the salary cap race!!!!

Who cares about winning and losing on the field, winning and losing on the field is highly over rated, what fans really want to see is a healthy salary cap!

all joking aside: Do you guys think this affects who we can go after in free agency?

No question. Jason_OTC noted that in his review. Agents and players know all of the perks of each team. If you want top guaranteed money at a premier position outside QB, you ain't coming here. You'll still get paid though...good money but there will be ripcords in subsequent years with a little extra up front money. If you're a less premier position like RB, FB, ST, I.R. player with upside, etc. SF is the first team you're calling. All are methods to ensure team friendly deals with safeguards, players who need to bank on themselves and keep us top 3 in cap space annually.
You know who isn't complaining? Joe Staley, because he's proved it.

depends on what your definition of premier position is. Some would argue that safety isn't a premier position anymore. We clearly didn't go after it this past offseason.

I would say, regardless of the position you play, if you're at the top end in your position in Tier 1 of players, don't expect to sign here lol.

Hard to call a Jimmy a victim when he made around $40 million last year. Yea, the contract structure lets us move on pretty painlessly if we want to after this year, but that is partially due to how we frontloaded the contract. And if Jimmy performs well and stays healthy he'll get every cent of that contract (minus taxes).

He essentially has an entire team of moneyball analysts who are analyzing pro and college players. Developing multi-year plans, etc. That doesn't mean he himself has an eye for talent per se but methods to identify gems, big boards, ranking systems, buckets, etc. I could easily see him becoming a pro personnel guy in this league but right now he has a lot more power than we think, is BFF's with Jed, has helped build a $3B business and probably is the highest compensated FO staff. Why leave?

He's the EVP of Football Operations, 2nd in command of the 49ers, a multi-billion $ business. I don't think people understand just how powerful he is.
