I definitely think the disarray in the FO and the mess around Harbaugh's departure was a factor in the retirements. Why would a player want to put his body on the line for Jed and Trent?

Ive decided we need to bring smith and willis back to our coaching staff.
Willis --> tackling
Smith --> bull rush technique
Someone get on that.

Don't think willis has any interest in doing anything football related. Would be dope tho.

How horrible would it have been for us to watch those guys lose it on the field fumbling around and getting booed .. throw in there tony dorset, oj simpson, roger craig, chuck foreman, franco harrison and to a lesser extent jerry rice.. it is so sad to see guys stay longer than they should have and end up being an embarrassment on the field.. we actually started to see a hint of that in regards to willis during his last year.. I was in denial but many posters pointed it out. i was so happy when he retired in a odd sort of way

BY was the best defensive player in the league before he broke his leg (or tied with Reggie White & Deion), and he dominated from day 1 (JSmith took a while to be as good as he was).

Agreed. Justin was an all-time great and he was a good player for the Bengals but became a HOF player with us later in his career.

I cannot choose between BY and Smith. I had the pleasure seeing both play. IF I HAD TO CHOOSE ONE, i would go with Smith. That near sack on Brees in the 2011 divisional game where he dragged that o lineman, had one arm on brees, and nearly took both down was one of the most memorable plays of all time.

Bryant Young couldn't sniff Brett Farve in the Playoffs year after year and he had 7th round draft pick OG Adam Timmermann blocking him. and all this was before that ugly injury. I'll take Justin 7 Days a week and 3 x on Sunday over Bryant Young. Justin was the Best defensive linemen of his generation.

I'd have to say their neck and neck talent wise but what pushes BY over is the ring and the fact he was drafted here and stayed loyal for all those years. BY is a niner for life

? Justin had almost the same stats during 7 years with both teams
7 years Cin - 34.5 sacks 314 tackles
7 years SF - 34.5 sacks 299 tackles
and it didn't take him a while to be good his season high in sacks was 8.5 his rookie year and again with us in 2010.

Almost identical but a 3-4 DE vs 4-3 DE makes it a huge difference. The fact that he was able to duplicate those stats as a 3-4 DE is incredible.

My point is he was a good player from day one. Continued that for 14 years. Good no matter where he lined up.

BY got a ring because of Deion Sanders. Once Sanders left for the Cowgirls, BY never really came close again. If Justin had Steve Young, Jerry Rice Ricky Watters on his offense instead of Carson Palmer, JT OSullivan, Alex Smith I'm sure he'd have a ring or 2 or 3 also.
