Justin Smith, one of the all-time best 49er defensive linemen appreciation thread.

I doubt this is true. If he really wanted to play again it would obviously be for a contender and as messed up as this front office is I believe they'd grant him his release without question so he could chase a ring if he truely wanted to. Holding onto his rights for compensation would be a huge dick move by the 49ers. He's one of all time greats and has given enough to this organization.

As much as I'd love to have him back theres no shame in him not wanting to play for a rebuilding franchise. Especially one drowning in drama and one that just hired an unproven Cleveland Browns castoff as defensive coordinator.
It's NO doubt this Ownership has fractured relationships just SAD!!
Cowboy saw the writing on the wall when Harbaugh was fired, and he knew he didn't want to be part of this dumpster fire lit by Jed and Baalke.
If he wants to come back and play somewhere else...sure. But there would need to be compensation for giving another team a jewel like that even if it was only for a year. No reason to let him go for free. He signed a contract. And got paid. He will have to honor his commitment if he comes back to the NFL. As to not wanting to play for a rebuilding team, or whatever the reason is, presuming any of this is true, tough s&$t. It is a business. And he has made good money at it. If he retired rather than ply for a team he thought was going down the tubes, he certainly showed no loyalty so why should the team? That stuff runs both ways, doesn't it?

Funny, if the FO chases a player off, or screws one in the minds of the webzoners it is an awful thing. If a player tries to pull a fast one on the team, then hey, bend over backwards and let him go, eat the contract, he gave us some good years, blah, blah, blah. It is a freaking business, and if he didn't want to play here, ok. He retires and he is done. He wants to come back? Deal with the consequences.

LOL. If you believe that you should not be modding this site.

Why not? Kolohe is one of the most consistent posters and steadiest mods. Just because your blind doesn't mean others have to be.

LOL. What kind of statement is this. Jeese.
It was a known fact that Patrick Willis was going to retire at the end of the 2015 season within the organization.

It was known by everyone that Justin Smith was likely to retire.

Anthony Davis has said himself his decision in no way involved Harbaugh and he is not upset he is gone.

Aldon had nothing to do with Harbaugh whatsoever.

Frank got a deal way above his worth and had a poor year. Not resigning him was the right decision, despite the emotional connection we as fans had with him.

I really don't understand how some of you fans fail to understand there is a laundry list of very obvious and clear reasons why Harbaugh is no longer our coach. Aside from the abrasive personality and losing the locker room, he ran an outdated offense and won most games based on the play of a defense he had nothing to do with.

Ahhh yes...the offseason. Nation football media's annual " how many ridiculous 49er rumors and how quickly can we fabricate them ritual".

These claims arent substantiated whatsover. Willis made public contradictory statements well after his surgery. Justins retirement came after the head coach was named not before. Add in borland and davis and you have quite a large number of unanticipated contract terminations. Now you have a suggestion that smith might be interested in returning but not here.

I think only you dont considèr this as a possible indictment.
i hope he doesn't come back to this s**tty team. He deserves better.
Once we get mature experienced management well be back.

Fans see it as. We sucked before Harbs. We won with Harbs. We suck again without Harbs. Pretty simple. I'd be mad if I were one of those many players who stuck it out through mediocrity then got a taste of greatness only to be ruined because our organization couldn't suck it up and let Harbs do his thing
