A lie. He fired him because they ended up hating each other and couldn't work together any more.
With that toxic atmosphere Harbaugh would have never again been successful in SF. That ship sailed in 2013. Last year was a waste. He should have been fired after 2013, because it was always gonna be downhill from there.
Jed is the one that employs Harbaugh though. If he hated it so much why did he even finish out the season? This is the same family that sacked Mariucci. Stop believing the garbage "mutually parted ways" line that Jed has been feeding you. Christ. Harbaugh spilled the beans in his interview with Tim Kawakami and stated that he wasn't going to stay somewhere where he wasn't wanted. Harbaugh wanted to be here. He was getting a ton of credit for the turnaround, Jed couldn't handle it. Not once during the whisper campaign did Jed state "Harbaugh is our head coach and I support him". Not once. After the Super Bowl Jed didn't even pay Harbaugh because he wasn't a "super bowl winning" coach. Which was stupid. He should have been the highest paid coach in football if he wanted to at that point. He turned this franchise around.
Fired after 2013? A 12-4 season? Yeah okay buddy lol.
I'm not saying Harbaugh wasn't a good coach. I'm saying the relationship deteriorated beyond the point of being rescued. It was never going to return to the 2011-13 success in that environment. Whether one blames Harbaugh's chaotic intensity or York/Baalke's inability to handle it anymore, it's what happened.
And, yes, in retrospect I would rather have avoided the toxic 2014 season altogether. I'm not saying it would have been more successful or rational, but rather that amputating earlier can prevent rotting and gangrene (aka 2014).
The 90s Cowboys had a similar parting (Jones and Johnson) and because they parted ways before having a toxic season (via Johnson's resigning) they were able to salvage a few more good years out of it all. It happens.
