It seemed like an awkward jump....he jumped straight up in the air. Seemed pretty unnecessary, he might have tried just lowering the shoulder and using some leg drive. At least he could have escaped the painful landing.
At first I this dude streaking across the middle and I was like "throw him the motherf**kn ball!".
Then I see it's VD with nothing but open field in front of and I was like Damn! he's fast as hell.
Then I see him slow down and jump straight in the air and I was like WTF? but also f**k yeah!
In all seriousness, though, It was a great play all in all. Davis really showed just how fast and athletic he was, as he just exploded up the field. I, like others, would like him to learn to truck guys and not always go for the finessse play; in this case, however, I think it was warranted. He wanted to score the TD and felt like the defender would push him out of bounds. Knowing all too well our short yardage struggles, I was hoping he'd find a way to get a TD on the play. I think he felt that the defender was going to try and push him out, continuing across the goalline. Instead, the defender stopped, as if he was anticipating VD running straight into him. This meant that just as Davis began his leap, there was no longer any reason for it; he realized this, and in the replays you can see him readjust his body and the ball in mid air to protect it and make sure he didn't fumble, which was a heads up play.
I was re-watching the game on NFL Rewind and I had total deja vu after that touchdown as while all the other 49ers players were celebrating, Alex Smith was running down the field with two fingers in the air, trying to hurry up and get everyone lined up....total Steve Young kind of focus and look on his face.......
