I came of age in 1981 as a sports fan, thanks to the first Super Bowl team.
I was 13, with my dad and my brother, heading back from pheasant hunting up in Williams California. I was in High School so I knew something was a brewing with the 49ers. My dad was SFPD had worked many a game at Kezar for security. In fact, he went to High School across the street at Poly.
The three of us listened to the 45-14 Dallas game on KGO on the way home. I've never looked back since. That week I bought my 2 first posters, Ronnie Lott and Fred Dean.
I also became a Warriors fan that year, Sleepy Floyd, Lester Conner, Purvis Short, Larry "Mr. Mean" Smith (they used to bring lunchpails to games), Joe Barry Carroll. I've been a Warriors fan ever since. Larry Smith was one of the baddest mofos ever. Draymond but without the offensive prowess. Too many Les Jepsens, Todd Fullers, Washburns, Jim Petersons to count.
I had gone to Giants games before that time, sneaking into games at Candlestick by hopping the fence at the main gate. The Count, Old Willie Mac, Jonnie LeMaster, Jack the Ripper, Young Chili Davis. Anyone remember Johnny Rabb, the catcher with all the talent but couldn't throw to second base. Mike Ivie, etc. That year we knocked the Dodgers out. We'd sit in the Upppper Deck. But, I started really following the Giants then.
Anyway, the point being EVERYBODY became a Giants fan in 2010, then EVERYBODY became a Warriors fan in 2015. Unfortunately, you have to make room for these bandwagoners. Being on the Zone since '06 we had our whole NOWIN EMPTY SUIT era, our Singletary era. Don't forget the Jimmy Raye Flea Flicker.
