Can't have bandwagoning fans if the team doesn't win meaningful games....

That first clip is still to soon

Kyle Williams is still the worst of the bunch somehow.
I don't know if a team that hasn't won a title in ~30 years can have bandwagon fans.

Let the Tartt drop simmer for a bit. I feel bad for the dude because that drop cost him millions along with the game.
I love all new Niners fans. As others have pointed out we were all "bandwagon" fans at some point or another. (I jumped on after seeing Montana win their first SB). What's really annoying? Other teams' bandwagon fans who are blind to the ins and outs of their football team. "Oh, they won?!?! YEAH WE BEAT YOU!!!"
I'm looking at you Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawk bandwagon fans.

IMO: Gonna be a fan? Be loyal and learn the game and your team. Stick through the thick and thin.

100% the bold.
People dont know the difference between bandwagon fans and casual fans. Professional sports are built on the casual fan.

Please don't break down the topic any further. Of course, there is a difference, but don't think it's really needed for this thread.

LOL at judging how much a fan a person is by a MB join date or post count.

me personally been a fan since 1980 when we moved to the bay area (good timing, right?) and I'm a STH to boot.

Of course it is. Many people are describing a casual fan and calling them a bandwagon fan.

I know lots of them. It doesn't bother me that they are bandwagon fans but I also hope that it doesn't bother them that I wont sit and have a football conversation with them. I'll nod my head and say a couple of words but that's it because the same people would be cracking jokes just a few years ago...heck just last year.

Mostly though, it just sucks for them because they're not going to know how good it feels to go from the basement up to the top floor. Even if you became a fan during the 80's golden years and the older folks could call you a bandwagon fan because of it - if you've remained a fan since jumping on the wagon back then, well then you've ridden through some serious ups and downs- more downs than ups and you're going to be able to enjoy this season (and overall team turn-around) like no bandwagon fan will. They can cheer but they can't relate yet.

So if you're a new to the wagon, i certainly welcome you. The more the merrier and you can start being invited to the watch parties and the games and all that. You'll enjoy it now, but if you stick with it through the future dips as well, then someday you'll know the feeling that the faithful are experiencing now

Good post.

Here is my admission of 49er fandom for the Zone to see:

I latched on in the '80s as I grew up in SF there for a few years before leaving to NYC. I was born in SF in September 1979, very symbolic timing for our team's history. The fandom was really more passed on to me from my Dad than watching games up until the '85 season. Without that I'd be Jets/Giants fan lol....

Lots of success as everyone knows up until 1998.

Went slightly fair weather 1999-2010 (with playoff spikes in 2000/2002), keeping up only on big name players but not following as closely. But having been out of market since 1986 I never watched many 49er games in general. I probably should've been more hardcore but have only been direct TV sunday ticket in 2012 (when I had DirecTV, then since 2019 when I moved back to the US and could get it on stream). I believe there was only 1 49er game in the NYC area this season in the 1/4 pm timeslots (Rams, week 18)!!!!!

If any of you watched two 49er games on Bay Area television this year, that's one more than I've watched since maybe 2000 when I happened to visit SF during the season!

I was at the Panther/49er game at the Stick in their farewell season. Then also them 3 other times in person.....Minneapolis 2012, DC 2013, Nick Mullens Seahawk win 2018 (and technically also a 2008 preseason game against I think Chicago). So I've seen the 49ers in person more than I've watched them on local SF television. Over the last 30+ years, maybe average 1-2 Niner games a year on regular local TV. If Niners were good then add another 3 games a year in primetime, and whatever postseason.

Since 2011, I've been following the team continuously like a junkie. Even more closely than I did in the '80s and '90s (but wasn't possible for me back then anyway). Internet and modern age television has helped immensely.

2013 I would go to 49er sports bar in Adams Morgan part of Washington DC for as many games as I could. 2014 I was living in a tiny island with slow internet, but would watch Niner games on AFN whenever they were available. Was hard to justify going to sports bars the entirety of the 2015 season in the US, especially after several weeks of sucking. 2016-2018 was away living in the Middle East. Would catch whichever games I could but still posting on here. I didn't realize then that I could watch games streamed with Sunday Ticket, otherwise would've watched more despite the s**tty time slot.

Can't claim to be the ultimate super fan, but out of market is a b***h. Just a small FYI, but that 2011 49ers/Giants game I caught in Charleston, SC......even though it was game of the week and shown there, I missed a chunk of the first quarter because the Falcons (backup local team) and Saints went at it into overtime. This will likely have happened a decent # of times over the years for most out of market NFL games.

So IMO, to recap.......bandwagon and fair weather are completely different things!

I'm trying my hardest to no be even slightly fair weather!!!!!

You could argue that I'm a bandwagon fan. As a non-local I'm also acutely aware that I'll never understand the fan culture or what it's like to be from the Bay area and support the Niners.

I started following, as a UK fan, in the mid 80's because my dad supported them. We'd won 2 Super Bowls at that point so I could easily be counted as a bandwagon fan. Continued watching the niners for the next 30 odd years. Through thick and thin. Putting in a lot of late nights and for 4 months of the year having very tired Mondays at work!

Managed to get to a few games when my partner lived in San Francisco for a while. Gave me a much better feel of the city, the 49ers and how they blend. I know I'll never have the same attachment to the team as someone who lives and breathe the team every day. Someone from a family where generations have passed down their support of the Niners. I'll never have the same attachment and full understanding as a passionate fan from the local area. It's just not possible for me to have that same understanding and attachment when I'm so far removed from the locality and culture.

I still view myself as a fan but very cognisant of the differences between my support and that of others.
I dont think we had a bandwagon this year….this wasnt one of those type of years where we were the frontrunner team. If anything the Rams were more bandwagon worthy given all the superstar talent they brought in.
I was born in 96 so I barely got to watch Jerry and TO. Growing up the 49ers were awful and all my friends were bandwagoners for whoever was good like the pats and saints. Willis and Gore were the main reasons I stayed so devoted. I'm also overly optimistic when it comes to this team like the DeAndre Smelter catch in college got me so excited and i thought he was going to be a beast lol. Anyways Harbaughs first year was so special to me that losing in the NFCC to the Giants hurt so damn much and honestly I cried more that game than next years super bowl. Every year I have so much optimism. I was excited for Tomsula because he was a hell of a dline coach and I love the video of him saying BLUDGEON!! (I wanted Vic Fangio more) Then with Chip Kelly I was thinking about the year he had with Foles so there was a excitement then. I have such a strong belief that sometime soon Kyle will be hoisting the 6th Lombardi for us and I will finally have my super bowl victory feeling like my dad has felt the 5 times they won. I love this team and being a die hard fan is who I am. Go Niners!
This game, is a brutal one to fan emotions.
