Hey man that's hurtful, we should get him ready to start during the bye. He's ready to handle a full game with the 6 plays he'll have down come next Sunday.

How bout we compromise? Alex gets to start the first quarter, then Colin gets the 2nd, Alex gets the 3rd. If we are winning comfortably then Tolzien gets to finish the other team off.
Wheres the punt option? If Kaepernick starts we're going to be seeing alot more of Andy Lee and short fields for opposing offenses. Maybe not but I just dont feel he's ready to go or he'd be playing.
Kaep's stats: 5-9 for 89 yds, 13att for 111 (3att for 15+yds) 2tds (could've easily been 3). Yeah that kid is terrible, no potential whatsoever, even with a qb guru as our coach this kid is a hopeless cause!!!

This is a phony question. A modern NFL team needs at least one good backup QB or they risk disaster. The worst potential single injury that the Niners could suffer would be AS out for the year. Whether or not they can win a SB with him is an open question, but they sure as hell can't without him. CK is a second round pick and thus a long shot to ever make it as a star QB. Keep him, try to improve him, and Tolzien too.

This is a talented team with a great defense and plenty of offensive weapons. I honestly believe Kap has as much ability to lead this team to a SB as Alex does. Alex was a number one pick and I don't think after 8yrs most people consider him a "star" either.

I would consider 27 QB's right now non-stars....doesn't mean they have 0 worth
Keep him on the team as long as we can. If he can beat out Alex, great. If he can't try to keep him as a back up. If he doesn't extend a year before his contract is up, try and trade? So we're looking at waiting till after the 2013 season to even need to think about it.

More likely, we'll end up keeping him and he'll run off to another team in 2015.
this thread is stupid
If Alex doesn't win a Super Bowl by the time his current contract is up, then they need to move on without him. If he can't do it with the current team, then he will never get it done.

Can you honestly say you want him to keep starting if he doesn't? He still has this year and 2 more years on his contract. He already set the bar when he went to the NFC championship game. I have high expectations for this team. Also, the defense isn't going to get any younger and the window to win is pretty small in the NFL if you don't have a top notch QB.

If he throws the game winning pass in the numbers and its dropped...yes he comes back. If he gets the lead and the D blows it yes he comes back. Speaking in absolutes when there are a million different variables is dumb. Depending on how he and the team preforms will need to be witnessed before I make an or judgement call.

option #3, start CK and help Steve Deberg move on. I bet we can get a 3rd for Alex.

Steve Deberg. Wow, clever man. How long did it take to come up with that and then refer to him by two different names in the same post? Good effort.

That is funny. For anyone who really did watch the 49ers in the DeBerg days, they will know that the problem with DeBerg was his propensity to throw picks at the most inopportune times, even against weak teams. That is the LAST thing we have to worry about with Smith. DeBerg had a very strong arm and could thread the needle from just about any part of the field. He could not read defenses very well however, another reason that the comparison to Smith is weak.

The teams those guys play for don't have the same great histories as a team and at qb. They won't be held to the same standards as we hold Qbs on our team, they are the standard on their respective teams. Fair or unfair Joe Montana and Steve Young have set the standards for our team at the Qb position. I don't think Garcia was a bad qb for us, he was alway under the pressure of being the "next" great niners Qb. Alex was drafted #1 seven years ago and I assure you he wasn't drafted to be just a good qb, just the life of a niners qb. No superbowl, you don't measure up!!
