Sapp will probably be one of the 15 finalists this year, IMO, with a good shot to get in. It's his first year of eligibility, too. The biggest difference is that Sapp won his SB as part of a team that was known for its defense, (as opposed to BY who won his with a team known for its offense), and Sapp was always a loud self-promoter and PR guy who is still in the public eye due to being a commentator.

And none of those guys gave a damn about gap assignments or holding down a double team.

Cortez Kennedy made it because he was basically a monster nose tackle who was also able to pressure the quarterback. BY has 31.5 more career sacks than Kennedy.

Basically, BY couldn't plug like Kennedy (nobody could), and BY couldn't sack the QB like Randall, but BY could do BOTH very well. In other words, he could rush better than Kennedy, and plug better than Randall. He was the most complete defensive tackle of the whole f**king lot of them.

BY was never the same guy post injury


the 49ers played a very aggressive one gap defense with him and stubby...many times many tackles for loss in those years.

BYs first step was legendary...not just HOF ...hell there has never been anything else like it.

for this generation..he would be a more explosive Justin smith....to bad BYs leg broke in half

he shouldn't be in the HOF imo

BY will get in, eventually. Look at the injustice that was done to Art Monk.

I don't know how BY is not a HOF DT.

Most people agree that Warren Sapp is a future HOF DT.

Their stats are comparable. BY had 7 less sacks in his career than Sapp, but he also finished his career as a 3-4 DE. I think he was just as dominant as Sapp, but he was a quiet leader unlike Sapp, Randle, or Cortez. I would take BY in his prime over those 3 guys in their primes any day of the week.

Yep, he was a great player but that leg injury deprived him of the truly dominating status that he would have had.

He might get in one day with the "veterans" vote.

There are a lot of great WRs that deserve to be in that have not made it. The HOF voting is wack if you ask me.

John Randle was an absolute stud.

Randle wasn't a stud. Randle was a liability against the run most of his career because he was too busy running by the RB towards where he thought the QB would be. I can't believe cortez kennedy is a HOF but BY isn't.

BY is certainly at least qualified to be in the HOF consideration. Charles Haley should be in, he is the one that must be in--- a great disruptive player on 5 SB champions.

It just seems like these HOF people dont want too many of one team in there, at least not Niners because I don't know if Haley would go in as a Niner but Young should def go in, Brent Jones. I think that these clowns should consider the numbers but not so heavily. Really analyze whther the player was a beast or not and let the people have a say in it to a certain extent.

It could also be said that he was a major reason Dana Stubblefield was Defensive Player of the Year in 1997. Bryant Young doesn't have the sack numbers of a John Randall (amazing sack numbers for a guy playing on the interior), but his impact on the defense was amazing. Bryant Young is one of the most overrated players in team history. He was very good in 1994-1998, and experienced somewhat of a resurgence once he was moved to DE in the 3-4 in his twilight years, but people talk about him as though he was a dominant force, and he never was.

For one, he was never great against the run. He was solid in that area, but not a dominant run defender at the point of attack...and that's the most important aspect for a defensive tackle.

So a definite "no" for the Hall of Fame for me.

The greatest interior lineman the 49ers have ever had is Kevin f*gan. It really sucks his career was cut short with all the injuries - he was absolutely the best run stuffer I've ever seen play the game. It was absolutely impossible to run on him. He was too strong and powerful and he played up to his legendary weight room numbers.

Madden somehow recognized that a defensive tackle actually had to do more than simply tackling the QB.

Actually he was achieving that award from 94 to his 2001. Not many guys can move outside in the latter years of their careers after sustaining a leg and bicep injury like BY.

He's a Hall of Famer in 49er hearts. I've never seen a player carried off the field by his team mates in his last game.
